maybe , have the step motor and put a heafty battery in a backpack, to save it bulking up the rod. Somebody's going to meddle and have a field day with you though. You will have to have a tough skin....

I'd drill slightly larger pilot holes than...
I'd drill slightly larger pilot holes than recommended as well. Easier to tap them..less wear to the taps...while still leaving plenty of thread to hold bolt. And I think its worth while buying a pro...
