With my Proto ones they are stamped with the appropriate drill size, Tap (with a hammer) until tight, then unscrew. Dont force it in or you may "expand" the thread and make it tighter.

Have a look at the clamp that holds the toolpost to the cross slide.
If it has 2 bolts holding it on then the FIRST thing to do is make a 4 bolt clamp for it.

I would suggest Telescoping Tubing available from aluminium suppliers in 48mm, 44mm, and 40mm sizes. It is 1.6mm wall thickness but should be stong enough for a "push pole".
