Thanks for your comments. I'm in the process of breaking in the blade. The cheap v belt also had a flat spot on it, so I bought a new Australian made one for $6. So much quieter.

First off, depending where you live it would be cheaper to go to a steel merchant to purchase flat bar and the can cut it for you. Melsteel for example.
Mild steel is best for this application.

Can the jaws be replaced from the vice? To stop the parallels from coming out you. You can shim between the work piece and the top of vice to stop work piece from bowing up.
