why did the production line workers wear ties?

The English have a thing for ties. My ex neighbour told me as a 16 year old appremtice at a power station in the early 1960s , he wore a tie . Ties were worn when gardening , fishing and just about any outdoor activity . Times have changed though, its less formal these days.
