1961 Spit screen Kombi
Hi everyone,
i came accross this forum on a mission to learn about a lathe I recently purchased.
As part of a restoration build of my 61 VW panel van, I found myself in extremely new waters, and have been learning slowly about metal shaping, welding and repairing the un reparable.
I recently got back into the project and thought I would share my new approach.

Hi Joe. I will be watching your progress with interest. I know how one's commitment to a project comes and goes over time.
Hopefully work will be starting on my new shed within the month and then it's back into some of my neglected projects.

Nice idea on the magnet, a mates got a magnabend fabricated but can’t afford the copper windings for it, this may help him out.
By the way Grays have a Yard Clearing auction at Mittagong with a few Kombi bits in it.

I’v spent a bit of time researching the use of bead rollers, and how I can use that to create better panels for my project.

Gday Joe great vid once again, I purchased one of those bead rollers and half way through the 1st bead on some 1mm material the top wheel started loosing traction and kept spinning... I though it was me doing a too heavier run(was only 1/3 of a turn of the depth adjuster thingo at a time).
So I though Id change the large dies to some thing smaller thats when I found the bottom wheel freewheeling :((
Its back at H&Fs getting fixed ATM, what I found is the lower shaft not engaging in the offset gearbox... some numbskull who assembled it at the factory didnt place the spline key fully into its slot and proceeded to seat it home with a hammer! (the only touch up paint on the whole machine is on that gearbox which too me says its been hit as no other touched up paint chips are evident on the machine and theres a number of paint chips on it...)
AS I removed the gear box it was easy to see as the key was chewed up and the slot was blown out at the side rear, obviously the key was half in half out just enough to pass QC.
So it will need a new lower shaft and key... well it better have as I will not except a bodgey fix it job creating a weak point on a brand new $2000 machine
So please remove your lower offset gear box and make sure that tiny undersized key and slot has been assembled properly... might save the head aches later on down the track:doh:

Metal to wood
As the winter chill begins to freeze my...... garage, I’ve been spending quite a bit of time insulating and paneling the inside.
technically, this has meant a shift from working with steel, to working with wood for a while.
Apart from the never ending dust, I’ve really enjoyed this, and the inside is coming along nicely.
I did get to weld some steel shelves, and had fun creating curved edges with angle iron. I’ll post some pics and add a video soon.
Oh, I may have gone overboard with a split system heater/cooler wifi control, but hey, who doesn’t want to keep their workshop at a comfortable stable temp?:roll:
