As a novice, using a 9 inch Hercus, my learning is that a rigidly mounted blade is essential... and the only way it has worked for me is a rear mounted tool (upside down as mentioned) on a T slot cross slide. This has parted steel on Dad's lathe with little stress on me.
Any attempt to use a front mounted parting blade on Ali or steel is definately something I will not repeat.
    Brass has been fine.
So what ever tool and holder, rigidity is number one... Then of course, on centre and sharp and appropriate lube.
    cheers

Always wondered why the factory supplied carbide parting tips don't come sharpened with the right side higher, so the part comes off first nice and flat and the nib is left on the stock and removed after the part has left.
I always sharpen my HSS this way.
Most of my carbide parting tips are formed with the right side slightly higher and further forward, most of them are taegutec.

Never have known that, good to know thanks. The one I have from many years ago is straight.

I have 2 or 3 already HSS tools that are sharpened that way but they don't have much of a reach. I can only part small stuff with them and so I need one that will go a lot further.

I know my mini lathe is 8mm tool height but my AL350A is something weird like 14 or 16 mm. I'll have to check.

Yes, one surface is rough the other a lot better, I guess it comes down to making sure the blade is lined up perfectly with the cross slide. I don't worry about it so much just face the rough end.

No both surfaces end up very rough and with pitting and galling.

The tool may not be sharpened correctly or set correctly or there maybe an issue with machine ridgidity, is the tool cutting through the material okay or are you hearing or feeling a binding sound, are you parting with feed and using coolant, what material are you parting, and if under power what diameter, speed and feed are you using.
Is the tool set up to part close to the chuck?
Do you have minimal over hang of the tool?

I'll see if I can get a photo of the tool tomorrow.

I already had a few of these blades in a bundle of stuff from a garage sale but not tested then until now. The tool holder came from china (ebay).
From memory it was 32mm aluminium I tried to part and it mangled both parting faces. Could hear the binding as it cut.
    I don't believe there's any rigidity problem. It's a pretty solid lathe.
I always use WD40 or Inox on aluminium and always part as close to the chuck as I can get.
Can't use power feed at the moment as the lathe needs a new gear, teeth mashed a bit on the 40T.
It did have a bit of overhang by design of the tool, prob around 35mm to the tool tip.

I think I tried it on steel too hence the tool needs resharpening now.

The first picture depicts the blade profile before grinding.

The top surface is the wrong shape. You need to grind it flat.
