I've been searching for the last 3 weeks but No hadn't thought of that at all.
That's an excellent pick up especially the manuals link. Thanks. Wish I could read it but then the pictures will help I'm sure.
I guess if I keep looking maybe one of these Russian ones will have English in it.

Engage feed, push rapid button, I have an eastern bloc milling machine as well and it uses an internal 24V electric clutch to make the rapids work. The clutch coil was burnt out (ex tafe machine) when I got the machine and had to get it rewound,

So does that electric clutch engage a different set of gears or something ?
Is this what that electric clutch looked like ?

Mine is a totally different mill so looks nothing like that. But the clutch just has an overrunning clutch attached to it, so when it engages is overrides any existing feed and rapids along.

To test the coil just check for resistance. Infinite resistance means the coil is burnt out. If the coil is good, check it is getting electricity when you press the rapid button.

I think the power flows through the box like I have put the lines in the photo, green is normal feed, and the light blue is rapid flow. Not shown in the photo I suspect there would be a gear on the shaft near the clutch that engages that big output gear?

The USSR stuff is pretty simplistic mechanical wise, but they had over complicated electrics. that will not help matters.

    Great pic.
Thanks that helps me understand a lot.
and yes there are other gears inside that will mesh when the box is replaced.

One thing I forgot to say. When the feed motor is running and you hit the rapids button the motor wants to stall. Now that I realize about these clutches, esp the one way clutch, I suspect the motor could be running backwards.

.RC. In my last photo showing inside the box, the motor (lower right) outputs to the shaft ending with the gears at the back (left side). So that means your overlay of my gearbox will be correct but back to front. In other words just reverse all the arrows you drew.

Yea that does not surprise me as it makes more sense for the power to flow that way as then only the output shaft speeds up, I just was not sure of the gear that drives the rapids clutch.

Neither did I until I studied the photos for the 47th time and it suddenly dawned on me.
