Unfairly banned in my opinion. Yes, I read what he posted.

Wow!
i missed whatever happened. This place won't be the same without Phil's knowledgeable input and his amazing generosity. He really knew what he was talking about and regularly steered people in the right direction. He didn't tolerate fools or amateur's spouting BS but that's what forums made up of mostly amateurs need. He could be harsh at times but we are all adults and any criticism generally had a good reason behind it.
I for one will really miss him.

I also read what he said and could see where he was coming from. He calls it as he sees it. I was surprised to see him booted for it. I think this place is far better off with him than without. He really knows his stuff and he's the first person to raise their hand to assist where he can. The local MW community are the real losers out of this.
To be transparent here, I have never met him outside of here and PM.

I have enjoyed the pleasure of Phil's company on a number of occasions. An outstanding bloke who possesses a wealth of knowledge that more than a small number of us have greatly benefited from. I hope this ban is a temporary thing and that Phil returns.

I'm a new member, I seldom post anything, and like to avoid the politics. But I read a lot. I read that as it happened. Phil was defending a new member. New member said something like “Hi & How do I make this…..?” Seemed to be a genuine question, and some members were being really helpful, until this Collins bloke jumped in with the "You must read the T.O.U's first". I can’t see what the new guy had done wrong? New member was from Southampton, UK. Is that how International visitors or new members are welcomed?
I’ve seen this sort of stuff before, it’s one of the reasons you get a lot of members like me who just read and don’t contribute.

I really think we need to move on from this - I valued Phil's contributions too but something happened and the history is as they say history. I don't know what was said between moderators, what communications were had between Phil and the moderators or what decisions were made. Neither do others posting here unless they are a moderator and privy to events. From my encounters with moderators, banning is not something done on a whim but is a subject of much discussion. It is worth pointing out that past behaviour is taken into account too.
The new guy had not done anything 'wrong' as such. There are some Terms Of Use (TOU) which people are expected to abide by. I don't think the new guy violated them but he asked a question without reading the guidelines for posting questions, which were pointed out to him. There is nothing wrong with asking a question without reading them but it does make providing answers without all the information tricky and potentially dangerous. My reading of the flow of posts was that Phil thought that this approach was heavy handed to say the least. Others may or may not agree with Phil's assessment, or mine for that matter. I suspect the problem was that he expressed his view in a way that violated section 3 of the TOU.
No. They are usually well treated and as can be seen various people contributed to the post, trying to contribute to a solution for the OP. There are other threads where similar questions have been asked by new members and successfully resolved. There are always people who show up to ask one or two questions and then are not heard from again. We are lucky in this forum in that abusive, OT, disrespectful and inappropriate posts are usually moderated out - I have been on others where it is everyone for themselves. The downside is that you will be banned if you don't follow the rules (see //metalworkforums.com/f90/t1977...terms-tou-read)

Nope, not going to happen unless the mods reinstate & apologise and probably not even then. Likelihood of that happening - well, apparently we're in a global warming period, so the chances of hell freezing over seem very, very small.
Makes no difference to me, I first met Phil on the No 1 scraping course. Since then I drop by at least twice a year, shoot the breeze, go for lunch, socialise. I'll still be doing that, and Phil will still be there to help me out with stuff, as he has others. There's quite a section of this forum that have benefited from his willingness to go more than the extra mile for us, and never charged what the job was worth. RC's slideway grinder comes to mind as an outstanding example.
Michael I agree, it's not worth pursuing further. I don't have to think it was a reasonable moderator action, however, given the range of tools that a mod has at their disposal. Matter of fact, I'm waiting for this thread to be 'cleaned up' AKA the moderator removing all posts he doesn't want on record. It wouldn't be the first time.
Back to boat wiring.....

I also think it is best to just move on, but I did wonder
I don't think the new guy violated them but he asked a question without reading the guidelines for posting questions

I'm not sure I agree that it's time to move on. It's the members that make this community right? If you feel that the local MW community is at a loss without Phil you had best speak up now.

Most forums allow different things. I have just been banned from a different forum so I know different forums run different standards.

I have met Phil on one of the scraping course and have always found him very helpful and to the point, which I appreciate. However, this thread is supposed to be about the latest tool gloat/acquisition/purchase/bargain and I would urge the mods to remove all the posts that are not relevant (including this one) from what is otherwise one of the most interesting threads on the forum. Those that are interested in pursuing the banning of members etc can always take it up elsewhere on the forums.
