Sounds like my kind of injury, I thought I was the only one to do silly things like that. Hope it heals soon.

This might not be new to others but this technique is new to me. Starting at 18:00 in this clip, he shows how to cut metric thread with imperial leadscrew right up to he shoulder .

that's brilliant, I would never have thought of disengaging the leadscrew then catching it in reverse. I'll be giving this a go tomorrow.

    Cheers

not really up to the shoulder...the part has a undercut ("chicken run" as my gunsmith calls it) at the shoulder

Default Round Bobble on A surface Gauge

    Yeeha !

I have finally understood what the round bobble on a surface gauge is for. ... Its only taken 3 years.

    See attached photo ........................

I stole it from here .... Scraping Jamboree in NW in 2014 - Page 6

................. and as a result of this new revelation have understood that you can achieve the same thing by putting a ballbearing in the vee notch in the base of the surface gauge. This allowed me to do a better informed google search and find another picture .....

"Nothing Too Strong Ever Broke": Squareness Comparator Part 1

I've read about these things in the past but the penny never dropped, cos the book didnt have any pictures.

.......... and learned how to measure dovetails using 2 rods ................ a great day.

    Learnt two things,

1 Do not take a nice chunk out on the lathe, the bit being machine flew out

2 The metal will heat up to the point it grabs and stops the chuck

3 The wife will kill u when she sees the mess

In your photo of the material in the 3 jaw chuck, the jaws appear to be on an angle, are they or is it just the way the photo was taken.

If they are on angle it would seem that they could be at there maximum,if that's the case it could be dangerous.

In regards to the angles on you lathe tool don't worry about the order of sharpening them and don't worry if your angles are not exact.

In regards to your present issues did you have a centre in the end of your material when cutting,if so the material may have moved in the chuck allowing it to come out of the chuck,if you didn't have a centre in the end of the bar you probably should have.

What do you mean material getting hot and stopping the chuck?

Hey pipeclay, The angle of the chuck holders was just a bad picture here's one i just took

    007.jpg

When i get the cutting tool right in close as in close as possible to the chuck side it starts to bind and the stock is heating up, i think i am possibly either asking to much from the machine by taking off to much material or i am just trying to rush the machine, i was cutting 0.05 and 0.1 once it was binding i backed that off to 0.03 and it would cut but a little slower untill i stop and let the piece being machined to cool down

If you are cutting Al you might find that (depending on the Al grade) the material is sticking to the tool so that it is not cutting very efficiently. I find a squirt of WD40 helps, but the long recognised cutting fluid for Al is kerosene. dab a littl on with a brush and see whether that helps.

Today I learned you should never put black bar in a 3 jaw chuck because the non-uniform diameter will damage the scroll when you clamp down on it, this is something I've done countless times until now, live and learn

That's a relief, although I might still go and check the runout on my 3 jaw, I've never actually checked what it's like

Thats a relief - was wondering what terrible damage I had done to my chuck, use black bar quite often.

I learned how to tram my RF30 today - wasn't the drama that I expected - calculated that I needed to lift one side of the column 0.023" and that was 1 slightly worn hacksaw blade. Loosened the bolts - odged the side of the column up and quickly shoved the hacksaw blade in. Not quite perfect but a lot better than it was.
