There was a windmill next to a gate on the way to town. It slowly collapsed over the gateway, still turning when almost touching the ground. It has now been dragged down the fence away from the gateway. Sad pile.
There is a new vineyard on the outskirts of town called Broken Windmill. It has a stone wall with a mock windmill laying perfectly on its side. I think they should rename it Sideways Windmill. It looks too perfect to be broken. Maybe they should have picked up the one 10km down the road. More authentic.
Makes me wonder though, what unattended windmills in your part of the world are used for. I doubt it is to keep your feet dry, like the ones over here.....
Peter
Water is pumped up from underground aquifers to supply various needs. I have the stumps from a windmill sticking up out of the ground next to my dam. I keep thinking I should cut them off. A dam is sort of an underground aquifer, isn't it?

Parted out some circles out of some stainless sheet metal I was given. Nasty stuff, but I got it done.

Nice little spray unit you've designed Rascal. Watch out, you'll have the locals placing orders for them.

Thanks for that info Richard, I had no idea that both Comet and Southern Cross originated in Rocky, and thanks for the pictures too. I guess that with the use of a crane, you would install the fan as a one piece unit, rather than building it out from the hub, as you would do using a gin pole to hoist the parts up. Still a pretty awkward job I imagine when standing on the platform, but not so bad if you also have am EWP at your disposal. This reply is a bit late as we should have been on the ferry tonight, but a sick dog has caused a short delay till the 12th of the month, which was just as well because some minor mods to my ute canopy can be completed, and not thrown together unpainted, just to get to the boat on time. I had been burning the midnight oil somewhat, till the postponement was made yesterday, now the mechanical work is done, just need to get paint on it, then get packed. We now have to replan out trip as many of the roads we planned to travel on are closed due to rain, so will have to be visited perhaps on the way back instead of the way out.

Sorry my mistake. Only Comet started in Rockhampton, Southern Cross were always in Toowoomba. Yea with the crane we assemble the whole mill head on the ground, and just lift it into position. Certainly easier then the old days of assembling everything up there, especially early on when there was no safety equipment.Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

Press
I finished this a couple of months ago but thought l would show it anyway.
l used a 8 tonne air/hydraulic as well as a 20 tonne single acting jack for the motive force. A lot of the build is scrap metal however l bought the material for the uprights, new. As you can see l used a couple of different methods of aligning the rams as they extend. I was going to use a cable and winch setup for moving the table but l found a screw jack which works ok ( l can move it out of the way if required.

Fixing Great Grandsons Trike
My partners 3 year old great grandson, asked me if I could fix his bike (a 3 wheeled trike) so here it is. Made from 30mm diameter plastic bar, not sure of the exact name for the bar. Thought I'd show how it was done without metalworking equipment.
Having no metal lathe ATM, I had to use what was available, the cut was done with a 2 mm narrow parting tool.

Again not having a mill available, I used the bandsaw

Here's the finished article and a very happy Great Grandson
