This one is not big enough for it's own thread...
This weekend was 'bitty', with lots of little bits and pieces that needed doing. Among them was a memento for one of the hydraulic fitters at work. The leading hand asked if I could do something as everyone else was busy. Here's the result -
P1030529 (Medium).JPG
An old piston (with fake seals fitted) and a portion of rod tastefully turned into a bottle opener. It may even come in handy as he is going to the UK where they haven't caught onto screw top bottles yet. Weighs just over 600g (and that's after I've trimmed bits off here and there) so not a light weight item but certainly one of a kind.
Now I suppose I'll have to embark on an extensive testing program just to check on it's long term durability.

Great job Michael, but I hope that your friend doesn't try to take it in his cabin luggage when he travels overseas, the security personnel would likely see it as a high tech caveman club and say , not on this aircraft.

Change Gears
Just little project.
I made three new change gears for the lathe, to fill in some gaps that should allow some more accurate imperial threads on the metric C6,
The gears are 27T, 54T and 72T.
I indexed the gear blanks using my cheap 4" rotary table, which has the unusual ratio of 36:1, which made it easy to do the 54T (2 turns of the handle and cut 18 times, move 2/3 turn, 2 turns of the handle and cut 18 times, and move 2/3 turn, 2 turns of the handle and cut 18 times) and the 72T (1 turn of the handle and cut 36 times, move 1/2 turn and 1 turn of the handle and cut 36 times).
The 27T gear was then cut on the direct indexer using every second tooth of the 54T gear.
I had a spare blank for the 72T gear , on which I made a mistake with the indexing. I can use this blank for another gear of less than 68T sometime if needed.
For some reason I cannot upload pictures at the moment...
Andrew.

uploADS
Something has changed , yesterday the forum was off line and since it came back on, the pics will not upload.
I tried the image upload in the toolbox , but still no go.
I have been using the pic uploader without problems for years, don't know why but it all of a sudden is not working

Replacement for a cast iron radiator fitting
My current car project is a 1935 Hudson, a cast iron fitting on the top radiator tank had turn into lace filigree. I thought about fabricating a replacement but as I had a suitable piece of steel I decide to machine it.
There is a 2.25" x 16 tpi thread, a pattern of 5 small tapped holes and 6 mounting holes, apart from getting those 3 items right no great accuracy was required, a lot of thought went into the order in which each step was done. 10kg of steel whittled away to 1.4kg.
