I replaced the crystal on the air compressor gauge years back with some shirt box plastic and it's still going
The indicators I bought are the current line and they have a removable bezel/crystal unit, and you replace the lot.
I see on the internet that a replacement bezel is about $15 - 25 depending on supplier. I suppose you get the index disc as well, as it all looks to be one bit. I have the part number.
I will ring Blackwoods and see if they can get them/price - they are Mitutoyo agents.
Cracks in glass covers are always annoying, just look bad on a precision instrument.
Cheers

Thanks for the info and the offer Michael. I will look into what you have said. Did a bit of clearing up of my office desk last night looking for a receipt and found some stiff folder covers I had saved. The type with multiple close rectangle holes and a plastic binder. Could be a good use for one of them. I didn't find the receipt but I did find bits of the desk underneath the paperwork. Mostly junk and scribbles.
It would be nice to get that indicator out, cleaned up and fixed. It has been stored in a box for about 30 years now. The complete .001" indicator was in there with it until I got the lathe.
Rob. I would be interested to hear about prices.

This might help
233 : Crystal Insertion for indicators and calipers
Though I think some crystals for DTI most come with a concave as they seem to be put on last, so you can only get to one side.

Thanks Stuart. $US240 for a crystal press. Probably get a couple. Save on postage for when I wear one out and need another. I think something could be arranged with a drill press, mill or even in the lathe. The inserts are just plastic disks with a raised edge on the bottom one. Lots of pics on Google. Mostly seem to be used for watchmaking. Wonder if I could use my Lee Reloader Press?
Food for thought.

Yes I meant for general info. You'd need to be doing a few to justify $300 for the press.

Just get those Chinese made wrist watch crystal press, they come with several nylon cups but none would probably fit since most watches are too small diameter. Just turn a suitable piece with the lathe and you are home. When you are done, you can use the press as a metal worker press, its built to take lots of pressure.

If you are lazy then this set will probably fit

Yep. Just having a lend of ya Stuart. Actually very good info there.
Latest update on my tenth indicator. I lied! Very Solly. It has still got the bezel and is still in pretty good nick. I measured the bezel inside at 52mm. Nearest on the web page for miti is 53.8mm. That means 1.8mm diam shrinkage.

Blackwoods bezel/crystal quote
I emailed Blackwoods today regarding a replacement bezel/crystal for my $5 Mitutoyo 6045S metric dial indicator.
They got back to me promptly with a company written quote (pdf) which I thought was pretty excellent all round.
$10.39 plus GST. That's very good considering I saw the same thing on the internet going for $15 - 27 plus postage.
I will ring the guy and confirm the order and get one.
I've found Blackwoods to be pretty good price wise on their stuff.
The email address to use is: [email protected]
I trust this info is useful to other members.
PS. I had wondered about getting a couple of frame clamps at the same time. Never used them before. Any one here found them useful ?
Cheers

That is a reasonable price. We have a Blackwoods in Mt Gambier. I have been there once or twice. I also have issues with their prices.
Are you buying that crystal from a store or mail order Rob. I rarely ever know when I am going to Mt Gambier and it is usually a last minute decision and on weekends so ordering one thru them would be problematic.

That's a store collect order.
Confirm order over phone /credit card charge, then collect when in store (Regency Park).
7 day turn around time.
I don't use Blackwoods a lot a it's a bit far from me, but the times I have the prices have been good.
Several times they knocked back the listed price for me.
