Gear Life Chinese Lathe
I have recently bought a Chinese lathe from Ozmestore which is described as a 22x10". I have had a play with screwcutting etc which requires substituting various gears for the right speeds and travel. After that I put the gear train back to standard where it agrees with the feed chart on the front of the machine.
I am wondering whether this is a good idea as it means that the same gears are in use for most of the time. Has anyone had any long term experience with these machines as far as the life of the gears is concerned. Obviously I could put in other gears that drive the lead screw and that would spread the wear, but I would lose the convenience of the travel chart on the front.
I must add that I am only in to hobby use so it is not flat out all day or even close. Does anyone have any advice on any special lube for the gears. Thanks Barry

From past experience, as long as the gears are set up right there should not be any problem with them and should last a long time. I cant say exactly how tight or loose they should be, but they should have a little play (gap) between the gears.

The traditional method of setting the clearance between the gears is to place a piece of thin paper between the gears, secure them and then wind the paper out. Works for me.

If the Gears are Metalic you could use some Heavy Gear OIl maybe a 200 grade,I use Chain Lube ( Motor Bike ) have never had a problem and its very sticky.
