    Default assorted fasteners

I'm at the stage with the mill/lathe that I actually want to make something - as opposed to just chopping up innocent pieces of metal.

One thing I'm lacking is a range of suitable fasteners. There are a number of fastener suppliers mentioned in the forum but most of the ones I've checked seem to sell in lots of a 100 (for the smaller fasteners)

I want to get a range of metric socket head screws in various sizes/styles. If I have to get 100 of each, it's going to be an expensive exercise.

Where's a good place I can get small quantities of fasteners? Mail order preferred.

Look in the yellow pages or google for industrial supplies. Most stock a good range and will sell one off to box lots. Obviously cheaper per unit to buy in box lots, provided you have a use for them, but 10 of this and 10 of that is possible.

Nearly any bolt supplier woulds supply you with small quantities...Of course per piece you will pay a premium of 100% or so, that would get lower the more you buy...

for example if a box of 100 is worth $25, they might sell you 10 pieces for 50c each rather then the 25c each for a box..

I wouldn't be surprised by a premium of 1000% for onesy-twosies. The more you can design around a common size & style, the more you save. Through bolts can be longer than needed; cap screws can have extra washers under the heads; with only aesthetic offense. And too-long fasteners can be shortened easily (sort of).

On bridge and other heavy structures, we generally specify only one size of bolts, to reduce confusion in the field, as well as demanding only one size of spanners to be carried aloft. Too much specialization is a false economy.

    Hi Geoff

I recently bought a whole range of different fasteners, including metric socket head bolts (capscrews) from Bolts and Industrial Supplies in Queensland.

    www.bolt.com.au

I did it via Mail Order over the internet.

From the prices I paid, it seems that they don't charge extra for smaller purchases, but stick to the same prices as for bulk. They're the cheapest I've come across anywhere.

Have a look at their website.

    Cheers
    Geoff

    Hi snowyskiesau,
Have a look at Industrial Fasteners P/L at 67 Barry Ave Mortdale 95346844, they have an excellent range of Fastners and will sell in one-off and their prices are good.

    Regards,
    Keith.

Thanks for the morning laugh. I've needed a few of those from time to time. Do they come in Metric Whitworth?

Thanks for the replies - and the useful wall chart!

    I'll give bolt.com.au a go.

Ended up getting a selection of socket head cap screws from Bolts and Industrial Supplies (thanks Geoff).
Ordered yesterday morning, arrived today - can't complain about that!

Their website lists prices per 100 but they'll supply in any quantity.
