Well how much do you want to spend???
It is impossible to offer any help until we know the parameters as my second suggestion was going to be a Hardinge HLV-H which run at around US$50 000, but an awesome small lathe..

Ahh that is better, around $1000 you could pick up a nice Hercus on ebay if you have patience...Otherwise one of the 9X20 Chinese lathes would do the job...
Sorry if I was sounding a bit obtuse in my posts before but simply asking for help and not giving us a budget makes it very difficult for us....Since this forum is anonymous we did not know if you had something like Bill Gates bank a/c or not...

I would hazard a guess and say the replies you are receiving are not coming from pen makers.
There is a section in the wood forum for pen turners.
Perhaps you may receive a more useful answer if you make your inquiry there.
Cheers

I use a 9x20, like this one, but was originally going to buy the C3 Mini Metal lathe from Carbatec.
You can read all about the 7x14 or C3 mini lathe here, or about the 9x20 here
Quite a few of the guys on IAP use either one of these lathes for pen turning.
