Default QCTP-Quick Change Tool Post for 9x20 Metal Lathe

After having completed my base cabinet the next job for the new 9x20 lathe.

Having read numerous comments from 9x20 owners about a QCTP - Quick Change Tool Post - I ordered one of these from CDCO in the US, together with some other bits and pieces.

As supplied the QCTP, a copy of the Phase II, does not fit the 9x20, the QCTP comes with a 14mm centre post, which is both thicker and longer than the centre post on the 9x20 (10mm base with M8x1.25mm thread).

There are several (I mean heaps!) websites discussing this modification to the 9x20, I decided to follow Steve Bedair's first solution, I may do something else later on. This was a relatively simple mod and it didn't involve any alteration to the 9x20.

It involves making a bush for the base of the post, 14mmOD x 10mm IDm about 22mm long.

It also involves making an adapter that clamps down the QCTP whilst screwing on to the existing M8x1.25mm threaded post.

The first 2 photos show these.

The third photo shows the bush and adapter installed and the QCTP fitted with a lock down handle fitted with a nice bright red knob (home cast PR, turned on the 9x20)

Could someone more familiar with these QCTPs tell me what the threaded hole in the back is for?

Next job will probably be making a 4 bolt compound clamp.

I have to say my first impressions of this lathe are very positive.

Looks like you're several steps ahead of me, I got sidetracked looking for a 4 jaw chuck.
Going to use this procedure to mount mine, all I need now is for some one to bore out the base of the tool holder for me

I also wondered about that threaded hole. It must be important otherwise they wouldn't have threaded it, right?

    Default Lathe Tool Holder

Just had a gaze into my orifice on the lathe, I can presume it was created during manufacture, certainly plays no part in the use of it.

When I purchased mine some time even years back I noticed that but like the milking parts on a cow transferred to a bull of no advantage.

Have fun using, the set I got I was able to supplement with extra tool holders as well as the boring one and the knurling special purpose ones.

Trust you enjoy your lathe and now multi purpose tool holder, I certainly do.

Looked at that one, not that dissimilar to Steve Bedairs' method. I'll probably eventually modify the compound slide to take a 14mm bolt and be done with it. This way though I didn't have to modify the lathe.

Interesting point, Steve, and others, comment that this mod does not allow you to adjust 12mm tools low enough (compound slide stops tool holder going down all the way). I was all set to either buy 10mm tools or mill (have milled, haven't got a mill yet) the compound slide. Imagine my surprise when I find that the 12mm tools can adjusted well belwo the centre line without any mods. Bargain

Sounds like a lot of bull to me Peter You might be right all the same, can't see any possible use for it (unlike those milking parts)

My QCTP also came with 5 tool holders, including a boring one, a knurling one and parting tool holder.. All that for $US82 Am just about to order some extra tool holders for $US9 each.

That "turned" out ok, except for all the red plastic swarf. That is red plastic swarf isn't it? First impressions it looks a lot like real fine mince. Not a colour you like to see on a machine tool. LOL
