QC tool post?
G'day Pete,
Any chance you can post the Harbour Freight URL here. I have tried but keep getting a message
"Not a valid number."
Your collection makes me envious, I only have the original circular tool post with the tilt washer. I can get my hands on a 4-way tool post for around $30, should I opt for this or go straight for a QC tool post?
Haven't got my lathe running yet, hence my question to you as an experienced Hercus operator.

Go for it Ken.
Once you have used the QC tool post, its hard to go back.
Buy extra tool holders at least 4 , you will use them
Grahame.

Big Shed,
How did you do that? I navigated to the Harbour Freight page in question, and simply copied and pasted that address into my post. Of course it didn't work.
Mr.Collins, sir, yes sir.
I will follow your advice, sir.

Like Mr. Collins says once you've used one its hard to go back. I made mine along with 10 various holders about 5 years ago when costs were much higher, about $400 I think. First I had to make a T slot cutter and add a coolant pump to the mill cos carbon steel doesn't like heat. If I could have had one for a mere $139 I would have jumped at it. Sounds like a good deal, go for it.

Do Harbor Freight ship overseas without too many hassles?
Any idea on shipping charges on the QCTP from the US ?
I'd been looking at getting this one from Little Machine Shop . It's a wedge type rather than piston type, not sure if that's a big deal.
Freight is quoted at $US72.Geoff

I asked HarborFreight for a shipping quote a couple of days ago on this drill bit set, they quoted $US47 for shipping via FedEx.
I haven't used FedEx for some years, used to buy a lot of software from the US which usually shipped via FedEx, it quite often arrived in 2-4 days! That was door to door.
Not sure of the relative weights of the QCTP and the drill bit set, perhaps en email to their customer service will clarify, they answered my query within 24hrs.

Gents
This has been posted here before

This guys ships using the USPS flat rate boxes, so generally stuff fits in the shoe box sized box and it costs flat $35 to ship.
I was going to order some stuff from Enco which like HF is quite cheap, however once I got the shipping which was FedEx only it became quite cost prohibitive.Cheers

Wow, that is a great supplier. The USPS flat rate envelopes and boxes are very reasonable, have got stuff sent from the the States quite often.
Thanks for that link.

Hi guys - I too had a look at toolposts from the US for my small Sheraton. I looked at the following:
Enco
Travers
CDCO
Get machining Tools
Little machine shop
Harbour freight.
The bigger ones all wanted to ship via UPS which was expensive. Plus after checking forums I decided to go the extra expense and get the wedge type.
I ended up buying from Bills Tool Crib. They have a web site plus ebay store. Arrived in a week in a fixed price box for around $23 US postage. I bought extra parting blades and three extra tool holders with no extra postage.
The toolpost has worked well, though as is noted elsewhere it is best to replace the locking screws with some Unbrakos or similar.
Hope this helps
Steve

I also got a quote from Harbor Freight to ship a Quick Change Tool Post Set for Mini Lathe (ITEM 42806-0VGA) to Australia and the price was US$47. The US$99.99 set would suit a H&F AL-50G lathe or any of the 9"x20" clones.
Thanks for the info Craig & Steve, I will take a look at those sites. He Who Dies With the Most Tools Wins

Quick Change Tool posts.
Hi People,
I just received two Quick Change toolposts one for a Myford and a larger one for my A330, a 2Mt live centre, a 3MT live centre, five indexable carbide turning tools, an additional 5 inserts and a set of 5 centre drills. including postage $ AUS 410.00
$US 380.00 the freight was 2 X $39 as it was in 2 boxes.
From http://www.cdcotools.com/index.php
I ordered it on Monday night the 9th June and received it today 17th June.
There was a little bit of stuffing around with ordering my fault not theirs, Check the price of freight before hand.
Get the item no's and prices from the web site.
Send an email the ordering system is no good for non US residents
I included my credit Card No in the email ( maybe not the best option security wise). Maybe a fax would be better.
I got the goods Yipee
I even got SHMBO to buy my things as a pressie,
I'm not really gloating, aw maybe I am
Thanks Craig for the link.

Some of those prices are amazing. Personally I think there are better ways to blow $100 on a lathe than a QC tool post, but whatever floats your boat.
I think CDC tools will be seeing some of my money soon...

For what is worth at this late date, check out Jeff Beck's site,
tools4cheap.net
I bought an AXA sized tool post (wedge type) and a few extra holders and a 2 centres, all in one flat rate $39.00 box. (Max weight is 20 lbs, my order was 19 lbs 15oz.)
Jeff's a favourite supplier of things to the south Bend group in the states, and I am well pleased with the quality of the goods.
One thing though- his web site's automatic postage calculation is way out-if you mention it to him he refunds the difference.
