remake panel
HI gents
I am restoring my rusty Lambretta. The legshield panel is so bad, I dont think I can reuse it.
I am wondering if somewhere or someone can remake this piece?

There is a whole lot of heating and bashing to make something like that.
Try contacting a local car restoration club for contacts, or try your local TAFE. The students may do it as part of their assessment??? If you pay full price to have it made up.... start saving.

There would be no need to replicate the panel, a good panel beater would be able to make that useable again for a lot less than it would cost to make a new one.
Ask around and see if there is any that do a little work on the side, it's common practice here, so I'd try that.

Jackaroo.
Have the panel gently sandblasted or bead blasted, then reassess the situation.
Any sections blow away, were buggered anyway.
A good body builder will have the skills to let in new sections using MIG or TIG.
Areas badly rust pitted, but still sound, can easily be filled.

Hi,
It doesn't seem too bad judging by the picture. What about having it sand-blasted and powder coated or in a proper baking oven? Don't they still make them for your model - even overseas?

Yeah, doesnt look too bad to me, but blasting it will tell the truth.
Have a look around this forum for some ideas - http://www.metalmeet.com/forum/index.php - there are a few aussies on there that can form panels and such, so if it's not salvagable, then they might be worth a try.

I make panels for classic English Sports cars as a job. It is repairable, and it is able to be remade, even in aluminium or stainless. It all takes time and $. If a part is not available, then making it can be assessed by the owner as to value.
For example if a rare 3 only factory prototype vehicle which has only one still around needs a panel that takes 100 hours at $70 p/h to have made, then there is no other option.
Maybe $500 to make that panel properly in steel. Try 'TinWest' in Werribee, he specialises in reproducing parts, and does a lot of motorbike stuff.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll send it away for sandblast and see if I can reuse the piece, maybe just the sides I need to replace. Worse comes to worse I'll get it remake somehow.

Does anyone know what is the thickness of car panel? Will 1.2mm be good enough to repair this job? I am not a panel beater by trade but I have done quite a few panel jobs in the past so I might give this one a try after sandblast. I might take a few weekends to complete thought!

Car panel on older cars is generally 1.0mm. The thickness of the guard you have may be 1.0 or 1.2mm

Finally I managed to finish it. I used 1mm metal sheet. I'll send it away for sanblasting.
