    Default Motorbike frame.

Hi. I want to modify an old motorbike i have. I want to turn it into a 'bobber' i f that means anything to anyone. I want to make the rear end 'rigid'' which will involve removing the shock absorbers and welding in some steel tubing in their place and probably welding some solding tubes where the swing arms are now. My question is what type of steel / thickness would you recommend ? It obviously has to be strong enough. Also do you think an ark welder would do the job? I am quite proficient at ark welding but if the tubing is too thin it is likely to blow holes in it. May be i should just tack weld the tubes in place and get someone with a mig to finish the welds? Thanks

    G'day Mako,
I have modded 2 frames into hardtails (some time ago) I used Hydraulic tube for the struts and braced with flat steel gussets.
One was put over the pits and passed the test with no problem.
Much easier to mig weld them and generally much neater.
As I said it was some time ago and I don't own either bike now but I know one is still going strong.
The gussets are the key to the strength and the rigidity.
