Default Anyone here ever run a Hembrug lathe?

Calling all Dutch machinists...anyone have any experience with the AI Hembrug DR-1 lathe of 1965 era vintage? I have purchased one, but won't get it for a few weeks yet and might need some insights. The machine is ex-Telecom and shows no signs of wear (very hard way inserts, so there may be some restoration work on the saddle to do after I inspect it more thoroughly.

any and all information eagerly sought...

    Thanks
    Greg

Thanks Sterob I should have mentioned that I've been everywhere Google can take me, including Tony's site. I first heard of these machines on another forum, read the info on the UK site and was very impressed. Oddly enough this machine popped up a couple of months later, possibly the only one in the country?

The week before I was offered an 1963 Colchester Student MK I 1/2 for the same money, but you could hear it rattling from across the street. Although this Hembrug is a small toolroom sized machine, I'm hoping that it'll be my first and last major lathe purchase.

How are you going with your machines?

We'll be eagerly awaiting pics Greg!!
They certainly look solid enough. I hope you don't have any problems getting parts if you need them.
My machining has been a little quiet. I am doing a bit on my bikes, but I quite often have to do a little machining on something and now can just do it!!! Funny feeling.....Not having the annoyance of not being able to get something done now...know what I mean?....

Thanks! Since I posted this I managed to get manual copies from a link at www.practicalmachinist.com , but my hard disc crashed a couple of days ago without backup. (yeah, I know....)

I have been very slowly restoring my machine, accumulating the components to replace its obsolete motor/drive system (DR-1M model).

I also bought some replacement fiber gears for the leadscrew drive mechanism from a fellow in Long Beach.

I plan to get some ground acme stock to restore the cross slide screw from McMaster-Carr in a couple of weeks.

    Where in Cal are you?

Yes, its complete. In fact, the machine is just two massive castings...the base and the rest. The headstock and ways are cast as one piece. It weighs around 900 kg, beefy for a 10 X 20" machine.

I was amazed at the casting of the base...it has three bulkheads almost an inch thick, and recesses that are a tribute to the foundry that made it. Then again, they made large artillery pieces and naval canon, so I guess they knew their stuff.

The wear that is evident is repairable, a project that will take me some time though. Its a cool machine-one that should be superb when finished.

I plan on doing two threads, one on the inspection of machine tools using my worn out one as an example, then a thread on its restoration. I will soon have all the bits needed for the restoration, just need another lathe to make a few parts

I am finishing off a few other projects right now but will soon be able to get stuck into it. I am still hoping to restore my photos and manuals from my ex hard drive.
