Default Machining Needed in Sydney - low volume/prototype

    Hi All,

this is my first post at the metalworking part of the woodworking forums.

I need a little bit of help, I am trying to design and manufacture my own torch made from aluminium and I have approached a few machine shops but as soon as they hear low volume/prototype they fobb me off. Closest I've got is an estimated price. The reason for the project is that I normally modify Maglites but it's too limiting with heat & run time so I want to design my own host. You need to be a corporation or a millionaire to use emachine shop and I would really rather keep it local.

Is there anyone out there with a lathe who is willing to help in Sydney?
The design is very simple and will probably need a few gos to get it right, from then on it's just repetition. I have sourced the reflector externally which is the hardest part.

    Default Lathe work

Obviously, the ideal for you would be some semi proffessional metal work hobbyist who is bigtime into lathework.I would look at one of the trading post type papers that advertise trade services. Be specific about the processes that you need carried out, ie parallel turning ,thread cutting, knurling etc! It also would not hurt to give the max diameters and lengths of the work you want turned.

I have a friend here in Mackay. He is so competent that he never has to advertise, its all word of mouth and he turns work away.
You will get someone much quicker if you give them the general detials so they can decide if the work is within their scope.
    best of luck

that's exactly the type of person I'm looking for Graham, does anyone know anyone like that in Sydney?

    Details:

50mm ID extruded tube x 129mm long, threaded 15mm on the bottom inside for tail cap, threaded 30mm on top outside for head & o ringed both ends.
Top also has a fine internal thread and tube is to be of a fairly heavy wall thickness (5mm or so)

80mm diameter head tapers to 50mm threaded to screw onto the tube with a thread on the top to accept a bezel for the lens. O ringed too.

Tail cap & lens cap also need to be made up to suit. I am outsourcing the reflector. The tube & head have some light knurling required.

As this is a prototype the finish is unimportant.

    Default lathe service

My nephew in Penrith has a little machine shop.
    His name is Paul Rushwroth.
He will make anything. Don't know what he charges. He is lisenced and a legal busness. I have a box full of machine tools to send him. I can not find my address book. I will get it later today and post his phone number. For Gods sake don't put the mill in a router.
