    Default Fine Finished Steel Angle

I have a small length of steel angle 20x20x3.
It is not mill finish black steel.
Dimensions are very close to nominal, all corners are sharp and square, with a finish close to ground.

This may have been a special made for a particular application, and I just got an offcut.

Or, it is a manufactured part of an assembly as it has two 3 mm holes drilled through it and the shadow of a mounting point.
But, it is not painted or finish coated.

I have seen ground steel plate/bar offered for sale, but cannot remember ground angle.

Can this material be purchased ?
    If so, where ?
I am interested in 10 m, to be used in lengths of 750 mm.

    Keep well,
    John.

    Bob, magnetic like mild steel.

Grotty stained appearance just like finely machined steel stored for long periods.
    Tools cut it like MS.
No sign of tool marks, it is a beautiful finish for a stock material.

On reflection, it may have come out of a lot of part-made bits for a live-steam locomotive.
Looks like it might have been meant for a buffer beam.
It was a typical deceased-estate clean out with me getting the rubbish !

I am trying to come up with a solution for the footplate edging on a 5" gauge loco under design/construction.
Two angles rivetted together and machined to shape was one possibility.

I can machine (vertical mill) lengths up to 750 mm, so I can use black steel.
    Just more work.

    Keep well,
    John.

    John,
how do you hold it and stop it vibrating when machined vertically?
Are you using an end mill or carbide cutter in your horizontal spindle?
Are you able to machine the full vertical face or do you need to stop short top and bottom?

    Not much stainless is non-magnetic.
Like wise some stainless can also get quite grotty and be as soft as MS.
    One test is work hardening.
Run an old blunt drill bit on it for about 10 s and then try and drill it.

    pipeclay,

Perhaps my wording was a bit vague.
My big mill is a vertical turret mill with 760 mm working travel on the X-axis with.
Have not put any thinking into how to do the job, that is the challenge of a great hobby !

I will start a project thread soon to describe the construction of the locomotive.
One of the first discussion areas will be making the footplate edge profile.

    Keep well,
    John.
