Vice Parallels
Hi,
I was browsing ebay the other day and seen these:

Gimmick or the real deal?

Vice Parallels
I think the concept is sound. I saw online somewhere the idea of using a ball bearing between the work and the vice moving jaw during initial squaring operations where the 2 clamping faces aren't yet parallel. I've done it many times and it works well.
This tool is really just an extension of that concept.

I've seen two largish magnetised nuts and a ballbearing employed in a similar way. However, the wider flats would have a bit more friction and hence holding power.

You can also use a piece of ground bar on the moving jaw or a piece of bright, you just want to reduce the contact surface area that the plain jaw face would provide.

It's hard to see $152 plus postage in that tool.
Tune in here at 6 minutes for some other ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW8HNAlUXxUChris

You could make something similar with a ball bearing using the cone from a large drill bit (that is, use the tip to drill enough for a cone to act as a seat).
It looks reasonable in theory but my concern would be whether there is a tendency for it to slip out the end. Steel on steel has a coefficient of friction of around 0.05 from memory, so any clamping angle over 2.8 degrees runs that risk.

I thought it was a bit more but it seems like there's not a lot of agreement about what it is.

My glasses are fine. Given that they have already sold 18 units I just assumed they are using jigs or CNC to make them. So they should be fairly quick to make. I'd be surprised if it was an hour. I also figured they are heat treating them in batches, so I'm not seeing $50 there. I guess they have to cover the time to make the jigs or program the CNC. In any case, plenty of people seem willing to pay the money, so good luck to them.
