    Default Astoba UW1

Recently I drove to the border to pick up a machine I didn't think I'd ever see, let alone own.

It's an astoba (later made by Meyer and burger) UW1. It's a mill lathe combination machine that is very strange and versatile.

This one came with everything needed to be a 110mm to 210mm centre height lathe, horizontal mill (although I'm missing the Arbors) vertical mill, slotter and a tiny boring mill (basically a boring bar and tailstock riser block)

The only disadvantages are it's built very lightly, only has a Morse taper 1 tailstock and uses very strange ungettable p22 collets. Also it's missing its two speed motor.

Has anyone seen another on here in Australia?

It's serial is 374 and they made about 1300 I think it's very early 50's. Sorry about the poor photos it's currently getting a good cleaning.

    Very nice to see.
If you haven’t seen there is a guy on Instagram as “swisstoolmaker” that has one of these and a kvm with lots of accessories to drool over.

    Ralph,

Are you running away to sea or something? Given the machines already in your custody this seems a little diminutive.

I now have a tiny garage at home to run way to like a lathe goblin so I needed a tiny machine to suit. Saves me driving 30 minutes to fiddle about on little stuff.

Plus it's so strange I had to have it.

I kind of think it would be better if the odd machines were located in one place. Want to sell?

Finished cleaning it up and just quickly threw its washing machine motor back on to see it work as a slotter. Hillarious but very limited stroke, plus in feed by had is somewhat risky. Once i find decent motor ill be able to really use it, this one has massive runout in the rotor shaft, wobbles all over the joint.

What size horsepower and sort of motor are you after, single phase or 3 phase??

Can you explain where the tool is that actually does the slotting?

Ahh the toolholder isn't in in that photo but it basically bolts to the very bottom tip of the horizontal overarm, right next to the Arbor support.

I've never seen or heard of such a machine. What a great project to restore it to working condition. Totally useless if you want to do anything substantial but no doubt a perfect universal machine for model making.

    I WANT ONE.

    Ralph,

Does this little machine have power cross feed? Is it possible to rig up the feeds whilst in the milling configuration?
