Default Draw bar for HM-32 Hafco Mill - Metal work Noob

Full disclaimer - I'm normally a wood tinkerer!

Recently become the owner of a Hafco HM-32 Mill, so I shot out and got myself a ER32 collet chuck to get me started with a few projects that I have in mind.
Discovered that one of the quirks with the HM-32 mill is the 1/2" BSW draw bar. From what I have seen in my limited internet browsing, most tools seem to be for a 12mm thread draw bar.

Although I am tempted to grab myself a bit of mild steel rod and fabracobble a bodgey 12mm draw bar, was wondering if others had come across a similar issue and what their solution was?

Half inch BSW draw bar is pretty common, and you can get an ER32 collet chuck with 1/2 inch draw bar.
Good project to make a metric draw bar, just copy the 1/2 inch one except for the thread.

I didn't even think to look for the draw bar thread when I bought the collet. Then when I checked the hafco site, they wanted $300 plus for a collet kit so I made the mistake of going onto Aliexpress.

Figured making a new one would be the simplest move as I no doubt will end up with both metric and imperial tools in the long run.

AliExpress is fine for tooling, as said just make one, or you can grab some M12 thread rod and double nut the top.

That's a great idea. Will get me started without having to spend time on making a new one for now.

Just to add unless it's a super special at Hare and Forbes or you need it tomorrow sort of thing, buy through eBay, AliExpress, bangood, or other Australian smaller sellers like Aussie etc

Yeah, i had the same issue with my mill. Made a new draw bar as suggested. First was made from mild steel but it was a bit soft for my liking so made another of 4130 cromoly.

    Cheers, Dom

    Hi Maxxsinner, Guys,

That is exactly what I did for my MT2 ER32 collet chuck on the lathe. In this case a short length of M10 threaded rod and then made a brass nut to fit. The nut fits into the end of the spindle just so that it is centred properly when tightened.

That horrible looking thing on the end is a cobbled together pin wrench, made from a pancake motor rotor. Its about 70 mm in diameter.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.

I inherited a mill from my uncle who was a stickler for precision. Amongst the numerous drawbars were ones made with all thread and nuts. I was surprised he used these but I still am. They work well and don't see any need to replace them.
