Picture for Kryn
Kryn,
See attached.
From "The Amateur's Lathe" by L. H. SParey - great book.
At the moment am using a knife tool with no rake and turn it all the way around so the complete flat rubs against the workpiece - works fine. Maybe it shouldn't work but it does on my lathe (Hercus 9")
If you want the tiniest cut and don't want the hassle of turning the topslide around to a high angle if you just push slightly on the toolpost with your fingers - that's enough to give a tiny dust cut.

Hi Guys,
sheartool.jpg shear.jpg
These pictures show the shear tool that I often use. If you notice it is also a right hand lathe tool rotated towards the chuck. The hight is not at all critical, if it wears you just move the tool up or down to get a new edge. That edge is set at about 35 degrees. Honing the edge helps as well.
For what its worth, I've also used a tool similar to make a grub screw flat on a shaft ! Lazy I know, I could have done the same with a file.Best Regards:
Baron J.
