Looking for information on a dawn quick release engineering vice
Hi I have a Dawn Engineering vice and the interesting thing about it is it is quick release which I have never seen before. Seems to be 3 1/4 inches
Anyone know much about them?

Dawn engineering is still a viable business.
Why not contact them direct as they are likely to have the information you require.

checking some McPherson's catalogues and the quick release vice was pictured from at least 1951 to early 70s catalogues.
Was also in the HTTP reproduced 1917-42 catalogue - not sure though that the QR vice was produced for that whole time. could check some catalogue prior to 51 but thats where I got to.
the range of sizes offered for the QR vice also reduced over time.
So looks like it was in production for a long time, but maybe wasn't a big seller as you just don't see them often.

We needed an extra bench vice at work in the early 1990s. One of the guys looked up the Dawn catalogue and I decided a 4 inch vice was too small, and the quick release option would be useful, so we ordered a 6 inch. When it came in we realised how massive it was. Seriously massive.
These days it's used in the welding bay, usually holding tiny TIG jobs. But the QR feature is great.

It is in my old McPherson's catalogue as being available in ten sizes, trouble is I don't know how old it is the cover has long gone, I would say it is 40's

Hi Guys,
Record made an almost identical vise, in various sizes, they used to use them in the school metal work shop when I was a kid, so at least 70 plus years old. Nice solid vise.Best Regards:

I haven’t used it for years. To be honest it’s not as handy as I thought. I have a 90 that I use most which is significantly smaller overall and a 150 also bench mounted. I also use a 200 pedestal mounted. The quick release sits in the shelf in my collection.
