SIlver Solder -Suppliers - High silver content
I'd like to have a go at making a steam boiler for some little engines that I made recently, went shopping for silver solder. After trying the local Reeces, BOC and Bunnings and Totaltools and only getting a maximum 5% silver content I did some googling and found this in Qld.
Seems a bit odd that am not getting many hits, am using Silver solder 56% .com.au as search keywords
Should I be trying different keywords or looking at jewellery suppliers ?
Where do you folk get your high silver content silver solder from.

SBA245 is 45% silver. I use that if I need a low temperature brazing rod. It's not cheap but great stuff.

I just go to my local welding supply shop, from memory it was about $15 a stick, about 400mm long X 1.6mm.

Commercial refrigeration uses a lot of different grade silver solders. Talk to one of the suppliers to the industry, IME most of them do counter sales.

I am very supprised that BOC didnt have at least 45%..BOC should have even had some higher grades...sounds like counter staff dont know what you wanted.
Reece is a refrigeration supplier, as are Heatcraft, Actrol and Airfrige...all of whom would have 45% silver solder.
However Reece is also a plumbing store and plumbers dont use 45% so depending on amount of refrigeration trade at that particular store, they just may not stock it....the other three would definitely have it as would BOC

copper to copper will be easier with SBA115...no flux needed if copper is clean
with steel to copper one should use SBA245..flux needed

Thanks ....
Thanks for all of the tips. Will investigate the various suggestions and yes looks like the BOC chap may not have known that they do have high silver content rods on the website.
Am reading the Stan Bray "Making Simple Model Steam Engines" and Tubal Cain "Soldering and Brazing" and building the Jenny Wren boiler from Tubal Cain "Building Simple Model Steam Engines".
Making the end caps was far easier than I expected - heating red hot and annealing the copper was a doddle with my little gas torch so soldering it should be okay too, will see.boiler parts.jpg

I recently made a Jenny Wren "look alike" and even though I have some of BOC 45% stuff I didn't have any trouble with the boiler using the 15% stuff from Bunnings.
