Default Do I need to run coolant?

My new lathe has a coolant system, and the shop gave me a free bag of coolant concentrate, but I'm not sure when or even if I need to run coolant?

I spray a bit of WD-40 on to the job when turning aluminium to stop it sticking to the carbide insert, and use cutting fluid when drilling steel with HSS drill bits, but do I need coolant when using carbide inserts on steel?

Coolant will prolong the life of your inserts. You don't need to, but it's a good idea where practical.

    Cant argue with that.

Me, well just drip a bit of light oil on the cutting tip as I go. Also have the air nozzle handy.

    Hi Guys,

I usually use diesel/kerosene on aluminium and Temaxol, which is basically lard, sulphur and white lead, for steel, brushed on or squirt bottle for diesel. Though I do use WD40 on the circular saw when cutting aluminium. I used to have a wax stick for this.

When the time is right you will know to use coolant.
