Thread: Plasma Cutting Machines

Here I stand with cap in hand looking down at my feet kicking away a rock....I studied for quite a while Plasma Cutters on Ebay and decided on a Cut 50 which stated in large print that it handled thicknesses between 1-14mm. The price was discounted with an Ebay voucher and I ended up paying $212 with free freight. I figured that I would use the machine to cut rusted parts on the Jeep project. The Cutter arrived and I put together the bits to make it go, air regulator and power plug, then started to see how it cut. On sheet 1mm, 2mm and 6mm it worked quite well. A mate turned up and was quite impressed with the machines results. (he had used a "proper branded" workshop model and it compared well.
I then tried it on 8mm, then 10mm and guess what....yep only gouged the surface. I sent a message to the seller who replied that that machine was only good up to 6mm!!! I could not believe what he had written. I went back to the original blurb on Ebay to check the cutting thickness and yes it plainly stated Cut 50 1-14mm.
I pointed this fact out to the seller who didn't really want to know. He did say if I wanted to cut 12mm steel I would need to put another $200 in for a bigger machine. I am not happy. If I send it back to the seller it will cost me $30, then I would have to put in the extra dough. Would I be guaranteed that this new machine would handle 12mm?
I am not sure what to do next. The Cut 50 does work well on thinner stuff even galvanised. I am thinking that I will keep it and just use a cut-off disc to do my 12mm project.
Another bonus though....the model they sent me is Cut 50 P. Yes it has a pilot arc rather than a scratch start one
So anyone considering these machines DO get some other opinions. I think I probably should have been more attentive to the comments from those who posted inJust do it!
Kind regards Rod

chambezio,
You clearly seem to have been duded by this seller. I have just finished dealing with another ebay seller that misrepresented his goods. I suggest you log into ebay and go to the resolution centre and ask them to help resolve your issue, if the Plasma cutter was advertised to be able to cut 14mm and it cannot do it the seller has misrepresented it.You should ask for all of your money back and not pay freight to return the item as it was not fit for its advertised purpose, do not accept any half baked offers he may send you, stick to your claim and you will get a good result.

This and check out the ACCC web site where there is information about fitness for purpose, false advertising and the like. If the seller is in Australia and is running a business, they are in deep shyte for doing stuff like this. It's outright illegal and the fine is quite substantial.

50A is suitable for that material thickness range. I reckon your machine is not putting out the stated current, OR the torch and consumables are junk. My bet is probably both, for that money.
What air pressure were you running?
As for cut thickness, the basic rule of thumb is that they usually mention a quality cut, and severance cut range for steel.
Aluminium thickness is half that of steel.
Stainless cut thickness is roughly half between the two.

Have you definitely got a good earth on the work-piece, onto shiny metal? The pilot arc will cut surprisingly thick without any earth at all even, but you need a good earth for the main plasma to start.

Might be a dud machine, my 40 amp combo will do 10mm nicley and 12 mm a bit roughly but will do it.
If you paid for it with Paypal put a claim in stating what he say's and what you have actually got it to do, along with any messages you have gotten from him. In most cases just threatening the seller with a Paypal claim will change their tune.Shane
Got the square peg in the round hole, now can't get it out !!

There is a chap on youtube who worked out a way to put polit arc onto non pilot arc plasma cutters, essentially it is just a connection from the earth through a big resistor to the tip. Proper machines would have some electrical wizardry to cut the pilot arc x seconds after initialising the arc.
