I don't know much but from the photo I reckon a power drill and file would get you there faster. Or just take your stock and drop it on the floor till it looks round.

If you pour water on it, does it grow into a proper size lathe?

Hi China,
What do you plan on making on a lathe???? That would be the first question that I'd ask, because that would determine the size of the lathe. Something like the one you put a link to would be as slow as anything to turn on, as maximum DOC (Depth Of Cut) would probably be about 5 thou, anything more would probably stall the machine.
I picked up a small lathe about 1.2 metres long, for $300, it does require assembling as the previous owner was going to refurbish it, but got onto a bigger lathe.
They are around, just a matter of looking and knowing a budget that you want to stick too.

Yes I viewed a vid on YouTube and basically is a toy and a poor toy at that, I tried to post earlier the site was down, I am looking more at a Sherline or similar I already have a larger Lathe as I get more and more into jewellery
I am finding the need for some thing smaller and cleaner.

They were in plague proportions for quite a while on ebay under lathes, coming from HK and China. Points to note are that they lack any automatic feeds, and have a wrist tearing 24Watt (1/30 HP) motor and a 1 inch swing. The add you linked is probably more honest than the local ebay ads were though, it shows benches full of them in their various configurations in primary school classrooms, and young kids actually sanding a turned wooden piece on one.
No I am not a lathe snob, I only have a Sherline (Au) combo lathe/mill that I won't use or wish upon anyone else because its one of a batch of 25 that were assembled from reject bin parts when Sherline Au packed up and moved to the US about 40 years ago. The only thing that straight and parallel on it are the two pieces of HSS that came with it.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

I bought my first Hercus for $750 with a lot of tooling etc, fair enough that was many years ago and above your price range and rpm. What are you needing the lathe for?
