Thread: Macson surface grinder wheel removal question.

Hi I have a recently purchased Macson miniature benchtop surface grinder. I would like to change the grinding wheel. But I am not sure what I am looking at in this photo and how to undo it.

Anybody have one of these and know?

I think you'll need to make a couple of spanners to fit the nut. A bit hard to see what thread it is but I'd take a guess and turn it anti clockwise as per a normal nut. Once you've got that off, you'll probably find the arbor has some sort of device to enable a puller to be attached.
I have a vague recollection that Michael made a removal tool for a grinder, whether it was for his Jones and Shipman, I can't be sure.

If I am correct you need a two prong spanner to fit the centre and remove the wheel and hub, then disassemble the hub to change the wheel, then the wheel and hub need to be balanced before fitting back onto the machine
it is best if you have a separate hub for each wheel.

Agree with China. The small inner nut could well be a right hand thread as the hub has a keyway. The larger outer nut will most likely be a left hand thread so that it will not come undone during use. Rotation of the wheel will most likely be clockwise when looking at the outside face.

It looks like the Macson I have here.
The large nut is RH thread, the small one LH thread.
There's a double ended tool for loosening the nuts, could be standard part.
The taper is quite steep, could be self-releasing not needing a puller.
I haven't had this thing running yet.

Any chance of some dimension on that special tool?

I ran mine for a short while yesterday. The slideways need pulling apart for a good clean at minimum. There is some wear in the pinion shaft bearings that means there is a notchiness in the rack and pinion action. Have you removed the table from yours? How is it done?

No need - all the important dims can be taken from your existing nuts.

Before I get to that I need to make some gadget to get the thing apart so I can measure it. But before that I have another project to finish. So don't be holding your breath. However I am betting by the time you factor in only having one hub the machine should be nearly free.
