    Default Squirt bottles

I think this one has been raised before but I can't find it anywhere.

In the shed I use squirt bottles for certain liquids like; water, meths, kero, turps, coolant/lube, degreaser, CLR etc. The bottles I use are either el-cheapos purchased at supermarkets or hardware stores or repurposed bottles that previously contained products like bathroom cleaner.

The two solvents I have problems with in these squirt bottles are kero and turps as any bottle I put them in stops squirting a few weeks to months afterwards. The best luck I've had with turps is with Windex window cleaner bottles which lasts about 6 months but kero seems to defeat any bottle within a few weeks or so of use.

Anyone have any ideas for squirt bottle for these solvents or any comments about squirt bottles in general ie what works and what doesn't?

Whilst I haven’t used it for kero or turps, I’ve found the Inox spray bottle great, have had mine for at least 20yrs, in fact I used it yesterday. It has been dropped, left out in the weather, rolled around in the back of the ute and has never missed a beat.

Another vote for the Inox spray bottle. I fill mine with a mix of non-aerosol Inox cut 50% with turps so it’s thin enough to spray. Mine’s also lasted years.

    I feel your pain.

I use them for my oil/kero lube mix and over the years I've tried plenty. Most fail quickly. The "Coles" green and red ones seem to last better, but it's all very variable as they seem to get different batches over the years.

I was in CBC Bearings and noticed they sell CRC squirt bottles. So I assumed they must be able to handle CRC/WD40 type lubes which have a high Kero content, but when I asked the guy selling he couldn't verify that. They may be like the others and just a CRC line. They were about $4- 5 from memory, which is quite expensive compared to the Bunnings/Coles offerings. So I haven't tried them.

The other bug bear is that they can get an air lock and not pump because of that. So I generally poke a small hole in the tapered top section of the container to vent it.

    So frustrating at times.

I'm interested to see what "winners" are out there.

I suppose I could use one of my Rega oil cans, but they don't "spray" as such and could get hit by chuck jaws etc.

    Cheers Rob

For the past 10 or more years I've used kero and oil mix to spray ways, mill table etc and don't seem to have a problem with the $1 spray bottles. I usually throw them out once they get old or get damaged.
I also spray straight kero when cleaning a machine down

Just recently bought a $5 1.5 litre pump garden sprayer to use (getting lazy lol) but the nozel needs refining because it sprays a wide mist if you pull the trigger in, or dribbles if I only pull the trigger lightly.

Using this mix on machines I find the kero thins the way oil down so you can spray it, then once the kero evaporates it leaves a thin film of oil for rust protection.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

I thought about using lube/penetrant bottles.
The Inox spray bottles are ~$15 on ebay, as are the CRC and WD40 bottles.

Dave, do you know the name of the $1 bottles or where you get them from?

I don't remember exactly where I buy them because I haven't bought one for at least 6 years and always buy 3 or 4 at a time, but it would be Kmart, BigW or a cheap shop etc.
I have a several around but I've not long moved here so there in a box somewhere.

This is a new one I bought years ago, I've been using for the past 5 months with straight kero, i can't find any writing on it at all

I wouldn't use kero on machine ways as it is an abrasive, that is why it is used for lapping and honing.

I see GasWeld stores have those Inox squirt bottles for $8 on their website.

Another thing that annoys me is that the threads are often not the same between bottles, so even though they look the same, they are not interchangeable.

I have a squirt gun with tube (new) from some surface spray bug killer I use around the house, which one would think might be made of better stuff. I will give that a go, but I need to use a smaller container with it as the original is 4 litres. LOL.

I have also considered fitting a brass spray tip to one of the Rega cans, as they just unsolder and can easily be replaced/reconditioned for wear. I might check that out today. I also might see if I can cannibalize/modify a tip off a squirt bottle to fit over the Rega tip. How cool would that be if it worked ?

    I don't give up easily

    Cheers all.

Not really. Kero is a degreaser. The only abrasives are the hone or cutting compound. The kero is only used as a flushing liquid to wash away the nasties and stop the abrasive clogging up.

No it's something along the lines that BS will always be BS.

You do know that there are millions of tractors, stationary engines etc that RUN on kerosene ? Many have been doing so for near on a century.

If what you said was correct they would have pegged out in very short order. Maybe last a month ?

Kerosene is also a component of Penetrine and other WD 40 type lubes .

    Cheers Rob

I have never heard of kerosene being an abrasive.
I have read jet engines do/can run on kerosene, I don't think they would be using it if it was an abrasive.

I've just spent my lunch time googling for any evidence that kero is abrasive, because this was new information to me. Nothing came up. Do you have any references for this statement please?
