Sorry, another "What metal is best" thread
I want to make a few more toolholders as shown. 25 x 36 x 69 size and extremely hard. I have a set of Japanese Hardness Tester files, bought from Japan but through ebay(?) and none of them will mark the existing holders. Does that mean the hardness is >RC65 or that the files are carp! HRS is the only steel readily available locally so, being low carbon, would that limit me to case hardening only for the new ones?

As before, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Charles

Case hardening these is absolutely fine. They definitely don't need to be 65rc, the only places that would benefit from hardening is the little v way and the retaining slot.

Not even sure I would be bothered hardening them if they are only for home shop use.

I didn't bother hardening any of mine.
The ones I've used have held up fine in a home shop environment.

Hy Dave, great thread there. I'd ask this there but it's closed, how is the blackening holding up on the adjusters you did? Have you filled all the holders?

I doesn't come up like that for me, maybe because I'm always logged into photo bucket, not sure.
