Pete, I think you got confused over my needs a little. I initially completed the taper attachment for my lathe last week to Stan's design but found my measured flexure of the 20mm rod slideway was too much for my requirement and hence my request for info re precision ground flat bar that I thought might give me a lot more stability. Not being as familiar as you with such bar I chose the pg to give me, I thought, a smooth even slide which would give accurate tapers. I made the rest of the attachment out of HRS like Stan, milled on my Bridgeport and ground top & bottom on my very old surface grinder. As I said, only the slideway gave me a problem because of it's length even though the linear bearings are mounted in a 200mm sliding block as Stan suggested. My old BP gets into trouble trying to mill for longer than 400mm and I need about 500. My surface grinder has similar problems in that the table travel is 450 but the table has worn ways and the relatively accurate grinding zone is 250 to 300mm max length. The proposed slide that connects to my lathe's top slide will bear on the sides of the flat bar which started off this thread.
I live about 40K from the nearest town and about 70K from Adelaide and would find great difficulty trying to find someone to grind my material.
Just in case you are interested, all you need to purchase from McM-C is an address in the US for them to send your order to. I use a company called USTOOZ and the contact is [email protected]. I've made 3 purchases this year, paid with Visa and had no problems.
Sorry for the long-windedness of the above.

Thanks Matt, they certainly have a lot of varieties but are too thin for me.

G'day Charles, obviously I can only comment on what you write, hence why members are encouraged to fully describe (with pictures where possible) the actual nature of the problem. This is a classic example of why that's so. Your initial question was a source for ground 4140 or O1. That's a strange request, because they're completely different steels. Here we are 2 pages later to find in actual fact what you want to know is how to solve a flexing issue.
You list your location as Tungkillo. I presume that's Tungkillo in the Adelaide Hills? As it happens I'm from Adelaide and have been looking at properties not too far from you as I'll eventually move back. There's no shortage of people that can do that sort of work in town, and it's not that far away.
Having said that, now we know what the actual issue is, I'd suggest there may be easier solutions. I can't say I'm surprised you're disappointed with the taper attachment as it appeared in the videos. As mentioned I didn't think it was particularly well done. Rather than going down the path you are, have you considered using linear rail? It's similar to the guide rods/bearings but is fully supported to stop the very issue you're finding. https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale...mm+linear+rail You would obviously orientate it so the cutting forces are against the rail support, and support the rail with inexpensive steel.
Thanks for the heads-up on buying through UStoOz. IIRC McMaster had said they were going to put a stop to that (and I thought did), so maybe common sense is prevailing.

The OP simply asked for a supplier of 4140 or O1 steel in Adelaide. He didn't ask anyone for their opinion of the suitability of these materials for his task. Explanations and photos not required.

So what? This an internet forum. You get the answers you get. Including unsolicited comments, advice and occasionally quite useful information about an aspect of what you're attempting that you may well never have thought of yourself.
FWIW (very little) I agree with PeteF - that's a pretty flimsy design, not surprising it flexes. The forces on taper attachments can be quite high. The one fitted to my Monarch lathe masses more than a complete Hercus lathe and has something like 16 guide bearings.

Pete, I initially bought a linear rail as you suggest but it was more flimsy that the 20mm rod.. I didn't even consider strengthening it so I'll see what I can do. Thanks for your help.
