Default Tough Drill Intermediate Pulley Question.

I'm in the process of replacing my Tough drill's intermediate pulley support components with new parts made from 316 due to their exposed location.

There is evidence that someone has been inside the pulley previously and evidence aplenty elsewhere that they didn't really know what they were doing. The slots worn in the belt guard are an indicator.

I'm wondering if anyone has a Tough with an intermediate pulley whether they could either photograph or describe what is between the circlip and the pulley? I don't imagine that it is a pair of ill fitting washers. It is possibly a dust cover that bears upon the inner race of the bearing and is retained by the circlip.

    Bob.

This is my unmolested one , it's hard to see under the dust but it is just a circlip as well
( I took the photos up the right way )

In the Tough drill's evolution things have changed. The cast aluminium belt guard probably predates the cheaper pressed metal guards fitted to my Tough. The through hole in the top of my intermediate pulley is 7/8" and the vertical shaft or spindle measures 17mm below the 5/8" UNF threaded section. The earlier versions of the drill appear to have a hole with less clearance in the pulley and the circlip's role could be simply one of a dust cover.

    Here is Node105's Tough morticer's pulley -

A small variation in the pulley's shape but a close fitting bore. Something I find strange is that Tough provided the lower bearing's threaded retention ring with a felt seal and, what appears so far, nothing more than a circlip to protect the upper bearing ??

When I made the replacement for the screwed retaining ring I abandoned the felt seal. I will install sealed 6203 bearings in the pulley.

    Hi Bob
Would it be too much trouble to ask if you have any sketches or drawings of the components you are going to remake?
I have two Tough drill presses both 4 speeds one quite old with MT2 spindle the early partial belt guard and a later Jacobs take version with the cast guard. Adding an intermediate pulley to one of them looks like a good project once I get my lathe running. Are you also able to give me the dimension for the intermediate pulley shaft in relation to the two motor mounting shafts please?

Regarding the Tough drills evolution, it's almost like they were constantly changing them. I see yours and a few others on the net don't have the stiffening rib like this one does I found on an old woodwork forums post but you have the pressed belt guard not the cast one.
    Woodwork Forums
Even though my motor mounts don't have the intermediate mounting, the castings where the shafts mount on my one with the cast guard are a lot more substantial than any others I've seen. It's such a pity they rust so badly! I think it's because we don't use them and they sit for most of the time. I got mine from my father when he retired and never remember them rusting that much when he used them in his business. But I guess back then there was always someone using them and they had oily hands allover them.

    Darryn,

For some weird reason I have an aversion to drawing these days. Could well just be laziness. So how about this as an alternative. You can have the parts I've made replacements for.

If you are prepared to pick the parts up you can measure the intermediate pulley bracket. I'm 6 km NE of Perth CBD. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Tough changed the centre distance between the motor support rails. I thought that I could simply slide the intermediate pulley bracket onto the rails of my now gone earlier 4 speed. I couldn't. As you say, constant changes.

    Bob.

They were made in the Perth suburb of Belmont. Some of them made it across the border!

I like the way he stores them outside to accentuate the patina.

Hmmm, 250 bucks for a rusty 3 phase POS. $300 for a brand new single phase one from Hare and Forbes you can plug in to any GPO. Tough choice.

    Don`t know,
Going by the bandsaw thread one from H&R might come with free cracks.

This probably should be classed as "interesting but not directly related to Bobs original question" However, My late uncle had a Tough pedestal drill, it had made it all the way to Newcastle in NSW.
Anyway after my uncle died my aunt asked me to help her sell most of his gear. This was in 2016. So I worked my way through his shed and eventually sold the Tough DP on ebay.

The buyer turned out to a relation (I think the grandson) of the person whose factory made the machines and whose name is on them.
The buyers last name was Tough as well.

    Small world.

That $250 rusty POS would more than likely still be around, when the H&F will come back as a Great Wall engine!!!
I know which I rather have, something solid for me.

It seams I am noticing these things more since this thread started. Another gumtree quality unit.
