Anyone know about Crown tapping heads?
I have a crown tapping head here that I am trying to find some information on, I tried google but not much luck.
Just wondering if anyone has used one before or something similar, maybe the same thing under a different brand.
There is a screw on there, maybe some sort of clutch? Just thought I would ask first before I take it apart.
Mainly looking for instructions on how to operate correctly.
Only writing on there is Crown No 1 Made in England.
Thanks

I've used similar, basic operation of the unit is the same. I've never been in a position to alter the clutch setting, so I can't help in that situation.
In the section where the tap fits should be 2 squares with screws on them, these are what holds the tap in centrally. With the unit mounted in the DP there should be a bar that screws into the side that goes up against the DP column to prevent the main body spinning, as the DP is switched on the tap will turn.
Pulling down on the handle as per normal drilling operation, it rotates the tap into the metal, turning back the handle, reverses the action of the tap, allowing it to be withdrawn.
Make sure that you use a tapping fluid/compound as it makes life a lot easier on the taps. I used to use Gunn Nosed Taps rather than normal taps, a bit more expensive but last longer.
The size I played with was 5 and 6mm. Not sure of the heads capacity, as some are only upto 5/16 or 8 mm while others can be larger, the max size should be detemined by the squarelocking mechanism.
Hope this helps a bit.

I know the way in which it operates, used one before just a basic one with no adjustment. I was just mainly looking into what the screws are for.
I'm thinking it could be some sort of clutch for smaller taps but I could be way off.
I think the proper taps to use are spiral fluted so the chips can escape.
It would be good to know it's max tap capacity as well. It has an MT2 arbour on it.
