Thanks Dave. I don't want to go down the flood coolant route. I won't be doing a lot of bandsaw cutting, so I'd rather replace the blade more often than deal with the mess. However, I do have a Noga mist coolant system that I will try on the saw.

In a magazine I have, there's an article on drip feed for the bandsaw. Quite simple to make too.

I also use a REE magnet sitting atop a piece of SHS cut so it forms a sort of bridge over a piece of fly wire which is held down over the spigot hole in the coolant tray by the weight of the SHS and magnet. The SHS is magnetised by the magnet and traps most of the loose swarf that gets that far.
I used to use water feature pump that used a fully submerged permanent magnet motor and that would clog from the really fine steel dust that go back into the coolant pump reservoir but since I changed to a washing machine pump which uses a small 240V motor that is fully separated from its impeller and I have not had any probs.
My BS is probably the most modded machine in my shed.
Raised saw height by 75mm above stand to make it easier to reach/see
Motor upgraded to 1HP.
Clear acrylic gear box cover to be able to see how the oil level is going.
Replaced spring with pneumatic down feed control.
SS swarf and coolant lube catch tray
Washing machine driven coolant lube system.
Original lube setup used clear PVC hose but this goes hard and shrinks so can leak recently replaced with silicone hose.
Blade contact length adjusters and tensioner plastic handles replaced by steel swivel handles.
Vice angle lock positional bolt nut replaced with a steel swivel handle.
Vice length grip lengthened to 125+mm
Added vice jack screw
Vice face plates added to extend hold, higher and wider, and adjustable so as to be right up close to blade.

Honestly in my opinion I've tried the expensive bi metal blades and I feel they don't pay off in the long run. Some broke from dodgy welding or I cut something wrong and ripped teeth off etc, fair enough they rewelded them for free but it was a 40 minute round trip to get it done.
I've had great results with the machinery house Starret blades, they used to be buy 10 get one free, but I think times have changed.
Wet or dry I get good life out of them, I'm currently running dry as I haven't set up my new shed properly and needed the saw to cut racking, making storage solutions, many jobs for the neighbours etc and the one old blade is still going strong.
If I stuff a blade from something stupid it's only $11, and I'm happy with bining that considering grinding disc prices.
I have the larger model also, but would not be without my little 6x4 1/2 saw.Using Tapatalk

Bob where's you thread on this, sounds like some great mods that I would really like to see now I'm back at it. The vice extension sounds a great idea.
I don't know whether you remember my thread on mine many years ago, I used a round washer type speaker magnet around the drain, the side tray had a hose that ran into a plastic funnel which had another magnet sitting on top of fly wire in it to catch anything other than steel etc.
I've got the old style Hare and Forbes metal coolant tank and coolant pump under it.
Never got around to the down feed cylinder, though I have it here.
I did extend the vice handle to stop my knuckles getting busted all the time, and reinforce the base.
I would link it but I left the forum and then came back a few years latter, so my 6-7000 odd post could not be linked to my name.Using Tapatalk

The mods are spread across multiple threads because they took place over about 5-6 years and some early pics were lost in the 2102 forum meltdown . What I should do is put them all back in one thread.

or start a new thread along the lines of "Show us your horizontal bandsaw modifications" that way everyone can contribute.

I had a heap of pics but they were on the computer before this one and I never transferred them, bummer!
I have been through this one but the mods pics I have are other peoples.
Looks like I shall have to post those then.
It is hard to believe it was 2012. How time flies.

If you could do a new thread on yours and we could all join in, Say something along the lines of a 4x6 bandsaw mods and tune up thread or similar. I am picturing it, but I'd be interested to see your vice extension travel etc.
I've spoke to a few forum members about the loss of pictures and the forum, some where sorry they where gone, but felt the forum lost it's momentum over the years. Other than the regular members I remember like you, pipeclay, Graham, steamwisperer, etc etc etc just to name a few (sorry if I missed you), it's doesn't feel the same as it was those days. I suppose there are a lot of other forums and FB pages around these days.Using Tapatalk

Hi Grahame,
I know exactly what you mean ! I was going through a few old HDD only this week to make sure that there was nothing on them that needed keeping before scrapping them. I found pictures of my MIL and BIL that I had totally forgotten about. Glad I've saved them or they would have gone forever.Best Regards:

Horizontal Bandsaws
H&F have a drip feed system for $25. Quality might be questionable.

BS mod pics.
I found most of them on my hard drive.
2012: Replaced some handles added coolant system and improved vice holding capacity and directions.

2014: Washing machine coolant pump : //metalworkforums.com/f65/t1846...hlight=bandsaw
Complete.jpg IMG_4235.jpg Pump.jpg underneath.jpg last one is the underside of the whole shebang showing the weight base to stop the thing tipping over.
2015 Motor upgrade - (Its actually a 1/2 HP original was 1/3rd or 1/4HP).
Also increased height and added SS catch tray
IMG_5397.jpg IMG_6155.jpg IMG_6157.jpg you can just make out the magnet and SHS holder near the RHS of the catch tray spigot.
2017: Down feed damper - note transparent worm drive cover.
IMG_1905.jpg IMG_1904.jpg
The BS was old and battered when I got is so now the issue is the main bits of the saw are showing their age. For example the main hinge is quite sloppy that it means the head jumps around doing the cut and does not always cut square. I might have to arrange an oversize hinge bolt to reduce that jumping. I am constantly amazed the band does not break from this.
