    Default Segmented belts

I’ve just finished getting the little mill running and I have fitted a red segmented belt. It is producing some vibration and I’m wondering if it will bed in and stretch and when that happens it will smooth out?

If so does it take long? I have taken the tension off the belt maybe I should leave it on for a while to speed up the process?

What type of vibration if any were you getting with a standard Vee belt.

I highly suggest the leather segmented belts. Red power twist is horrible stuff, the corners of each piece are too sharp and tough. G and R industrial in Fitzroy stock made in Australia leather belting. I just bought 7 meters of C section for my DSG and it's very quiet.

Didn’t have one, or a motor.

The motor arm seems to be micro bouncing with the links.

Any thought that the vibration is from somewhere else.

    Hi Dean,

Is it running in the right direction ?
Some of these link belts are intended to run only one way.

Didn’t know they ran one way or which way this one should. I know it’s the right side up.

I fitted a B section power twist (green links) to my lathe and found that there was less vibration than with the original standard belt, it looks in the photo that you have a tension device fitted down near the pivot point of the arm that the motor is mounted on, that arm is quite long and will have a certain amount of flex, having the motor mounted up high on the arm would not help - if it were me I would fit a steady from the top of the arm and back to the top of the mill, it wouldn't take much effort with some G clamps and a length of steel tube to rig a temporary steady and see if that has any affect on the vibration.

Dale, you haven't fitted the latching belt tensioner yet (that would act as a clutch as well).
Like familyguy, I suspect that would fix or reduce you vibrations enormously.

Joe, it doesn’t fit. I’ll have to work out some sort of modification and try to make it work.

Hmm, I was wondering about this very thing. I bought a link belt last week and its a very stiff plastic kind of one and I wondered how it will go. I was expecting to get a leather type one, I'm a bit concerned as I don't think this plastic one will ever soften up and probably isn't even designed for smaller pulleys (say 2"+). It was pretty pricey too at about $50p/m, I needed to buy 2m . Then it turns out I didn't actually need it as I changed the motor arrangement on the band saw and it then allowed fitment of a standard V belt I had on-hand.

Given I've got it I might install in anyway and just see how it goes. I've been trying to isolate a vibration in the bandsaw (I was ruling out a set in the V belt) but I think I tracked it down to the bigger pulley on the lower wheel being ever so slightly out of true. I also thought I could put the belt on the Hercus. Anyway, will be interesting to see if I get any fine vibrations from the belt.
