Default New to me Waldown needs work.

I just bought this drill press this morning.

I bought it for parts (a couple of pulleys I need for a very nice 8SN) but I am beginning to think I should fix it up. It looks a far more capable machine than the 8SN.

The casting says it is a 2M but the badge says it is a 3M and it does indeed have a #3MT. Can anybody explain that anomaly?

The only thing obviously broken so far is the return spring. I assume that Brobo will have this part for a small fortune.
I am hoping I can find someone on the forums with the skills to fix the bits missing from the table for a reasonable price (I certainly don't). I read somewhere that Anorak Bob paid $400 for a new one. I am would like to avoid that.

And why did someone in the distant past spray it with silver paint? It looks hideous.

It's odd that - my 2M has a 3MT as well. Looks in really good nick though - shame to break it up for parts in that condition. I have some cast iron scraps that you could plug the table with but I am thinking whether it is worth the bother. It's in a lot better shape than most tables I've seen.

Yeah that table is just fine, mine looks like it spent the last decade at the bottom of a mine shaft it's 40% holes. I would absolutely keep the 3m and scrap the 8sn every time.

One handy thing the mt quill gives you is you can pop a dead centre in it and use it as a centring device.

Caskwarrior thanks for the tip about using a dead centre makes perfect sense. I don't think I am scrapping either, the 8SN is really nice and has its original paint but missing parts (see photoIMG_20181111_113007.jpg). It has a 2MT so your tip still applies. I think I need to buy another machine for parts to fix the 8SN and need to cleanup and fixup the 3M. I have ended up with twice the drill press problems I had yesterday.

You can never have enough drill presses.
Eventually you'll have enough, that you won't need to change the speeds on any of them. At least they're of a quality build, not like the rubbish that is now produced.

If you find me the parts I need for the 8SN I will immediately dispose of 2 drill presses.

So besides the pulleys (and mounting piece) what do you need, or is that it?

A thought too for the 2/3M. I found on mine that the T slots were not quite the right size for the standard 3/8" kit T-nuts I had. Running down with a T slot cutter just takes them out a little bit, so it might be worth checking whether or not you need to do that. Finding out in the middle of a job is not the best way...

Hi, I have a new return spring that might fit your machine ! I bought it as a spare for my Fobco Star, but it won't fit, it goes in but its too wide.

I'll take a picture later and post it here.

That is all I need for the 8SN. Thanks for the heads up on the T slots on the 2/3M, my 8SN also has exactly the same table so I will have to look at that too.

    Hi Eric,

I have the feeling that it is going to be no use to you !

I had forgotten that my Fobco spring is 16 mm wide as well and this one was too wide, which is why I still have it unused.

Anyway I promised pictures so here they are !
    Sorry about that.

The coil is 50 mm diameter and 20 mm wide. The diameter is right !

I have no idea what this one would fit at all.

Do a search on ebay for "quill spring " Plenty to choose from for around $10
I fixed my drill press using one of these - works great

    Eskimo,

I only have 4 Waldowns with only the 2 NH's able to do useful work. You mentioned your collection was at least 5 a short while ago, now you have moved on an NH we might possibly be equally greedy?

20mm definitely won't fit but thanks for the photos. Along with Petips post it gives me some impetus to search on ebay.
