The same kind of springs are used in vacuum cleaners to return the powercord into their cubby hole, as well as starter cord returns on chainsaws and motor mowers.
They are sold on eBay, Alibaba and Aliexpress in any size you can imagine - as mentioned before, they are all less than $10, often delivered. That was the source for my missing 8SN and the broken one in my Servian drill press....

    Hi Eric,

When you quoted the width in your earlier post I suspected it wouldn't fit. The Fobco one is 16 mm wide as well. The replacement I got came from the bay. But I paid quite a bit more than $10 for it, about double if I recall. But it was free postage.

    Eric,

The 3M quill is more substantial than that fitted to an 8SN and the return spring fitted may well be stronger. The replacement genuine Waldown spring I have on my 3M is 5/8" wide and approximately 1mm thick. I'm not unfurling it to tell you how long it is!!!!

It would genuinely be an addiction if one were to bid on the 8SN at the hospital.

I have the original spring and am wondering about a repair. At over $100 for a new one it seems worth a try. As you can see in this photo IMG_20181113_170027.jpg only the very end of the spring is broken. My thoughts are to try annealing just the end of the spring and rebending it (I don't have an oxy set so this is easier said than done) or maybe use a dremel to make a couple of holes through the spring and rivet something on. Any thoughts as to the relative chances of success?

Yeah i'd attempt to repair that, pretty sure I have done a similar thing in the past. I don't think I applied any heat to it, just bent it to suit.

    Eric,

It is weird that the spring hasn't unfurled itself. Hopefully it still has enough tension when wound up tighter to do the job if you can actually bend the end of the thing back to usefulness.

I lost it by $5 due to being given dinner at precisely the wrong moment. I wanted the motor pulley (its only 4 speed) as an interim solution for my 8SN but Anorak Bob has just sold me one so until I can find the parts to make it 8 speed I will have something to make holes with.

    Any suggestions on bending it?

An alternative to heat the end of the spring:

IMG_20181113_202237.jpgWhile you were crafting that advice I did pretty much that. It is just left to see how long it lasts for. Here it is installed for a test. The whole needs to come apart. Whatever grease was used on this machine seems to have turned into tar.
