    Default Unusual Waldown bearing arrangement

I pulled out the quill with the idea of cleaning out the years of accumulated muck and replace the bearings prophylactically. I had studied the 2M and 3M pdfs so knew what the two possibilities were for bearing arrangements. Only to find something completely different.

The nose of the spindle is carried in a NKIA 5907 and the tail is a NKX 30. The former is a combined angular contact and needle roller and the latter a combined thrust and needle roller.

These look error prone to replace and are quite expensive from local bearing suppliers so for the moment they are getting a clean out and new grease.

Here are a few of photos IMG_20181116_190049.jpgIMG_20181116_190057.jpgIMG_20181116_190104.jpg

Has anybody else come across this arrangement? Ii this likely to be a factory install or something done later?

    Eric,

I'm not going to be able to shed any light on this unfortunately. Given the overall state of my 3m when I acquired it, I would have certainly replaced the bearings. But it was in 2006 and I have no photographic record of the dismantled spindle.

What I do have is a photocopy of a fax sent to me by Waldown back in 2005. It is an exploded parts drawing of the older pressed metal belt guarded 2M / 3M head assembly. It shows a different configuration of bearings to yours. A pair 7205s at the nose and a pair of 6205s at the top end. The bearing numbers are difficult to read on the photocopy. I will photograph the drawing and post it here if it's of interest.

That sounds like the 2M quill in the pdf at //metalworkforums.com/attachmen...1&d=1405295004
If so no need to post me a copy. Today Michael G did a bit of cosmetic cleaning up of the quill for me where someone had beaten it with a hammer. So it is looking a little less beaten up.

    Thank you Eric.

    Default Morse Taper reamers

Today I borrowed a MT2 and a MT3 reamer in the hope of cleaning up the tapers on my 2M and 8SN drill presses (both are having their bearings replaced so I can do this on the bench). However both bottomed out just as they started cutting the end of the reamer hit the end of the hole in each case. If they were my reamers I would have ground them a bit of the end but that's not a possibility. I am wondering if anyone has experience of cheap ebay MT reamers? Or other solutions?

Id probably chuck the spindles up and drill the end relief deeper. How bad are the tapers? i have made very cheap cleanup laps by buying MT arbors, grinding slits for paste clearance and lapping them. Could probably make a crude reamer that way too I only lapped because the socket was hardened.

Unsure how to quantify how bad they are other than they feel bumpy and rough and it looks like something has spun in there. Possibly a chuck arbor without a tang.

I think your suggestion is the right solution but at the moment I only have a Myford 7 that works (Colchester Bantam has no tails stock) and neither of the spindles will fit down the bore far enough to chuck up. I would only have to drill 2mm deeper at most.

    Hi Eric,

Can you not put the spindle on a "V" block, packed up if needed, on the cross slide and drill from the chuck.
    Best Regards:

Bodgery will find a way, hand drill? Or what baron suggested I seem to remember that the compound comes off a Myford pretty easily.

Well it turns out my limited set of larger drill bits is inappropriate for either spindle so back to square one.

What depth is the Morse taper to, and what size do you need?
If I don't have the correct size, we saw someone who would have, he might even chuck it in his lathe and deepen the hole for you??? What else are friends for.

    Hi Guys,

Yes it does, just two screws !

Eric, If you do decide to go down that route, use the tail stock to centre the back end and support the spindle. If you haven't got a big enough drill, put a boring bar in the four jaw and do it that way.
