Default Waldown 8SN what is missing?

Hi all I have been looking for a Waldown drill press for a while. Finally I won one at auction today. WHat is there seems to be in excellent condition however it needs a motor and some pulleys. Can anyone help me with the details of what I need to get 8 speeds?

    Hi,

From those pictures it looks to be in very good condition ! The slight dimple in the table is nothing, most drill presses have a hole in the table there as standard. I bet someone needed a motor and pinched it off that drill and then stuck it back in to stores and it was forgotten about.

It is in great condition. I think there must be some sort of story behind it being so good.

At the moment my problem is I just don't understand how you get 8 speeds from it.

I think there might be an intermediate spindle and two belts used. You really need a picture of one from the top then you can see how it fits together.

Story wise, I remember something similar from years ago ! Where parts were borrowed from an expensive gear motor and the remains of the gearbox hidden away in the stores.

I read somewhere, the model for woodwork has 4-speed and the metalwork has a extra pulley in between for extra speed range. Here is mine, it has 4 speed and I suspect yours is the same. Mine has been converted to single phase and drum switch.

Eric, next time you visit, have a look at mine. Not sure about 8 speeds though. The ones with an intermediate pulley allow 3 positions on the motor but the middle pulley has four grooves. As the motor belt takes up one of those positions, effectively there are 3x3=9 speeds.
Having said that, I'm not too impressed with the speed distribution that the Waldown has, as there is (to me) a large hole in the middle of the range. See //metalworkforums.com/f65/t2000...d-optimisation

You could also use a two speed motor. Ive been running a two speed washing machine motor (old type) on my old Richardson DP since about 1978. The two speed motor is great.

I found the intermediate pulley adjustment has been covered by Anorak Bob Waldown Intermediate Pulley Eccentric Mount Photos

These forums are great for that.

Careful: the currently available parts are metric and many Waldowns (if not all) without the Brobo label are imperial.

Here are some details of my version of an intermediate pulley. I couldn;t fit bearings into the pulley I had, so fitted them into the excenter....

If you used a VFD you could easily get away with just a pair of pulleys and one belt, ie no intermediate pulley required and no joggling two belts over each other to go from uber high to low speeds.

This one is the same model as yours ( I think 8SN) but it has a different shaped lid.
