It never even occurred to me the speed might not be enough. I was just using a drill for the smaller mop. The 6" ones in the link might just be big enough from your obervation then. Thanks for all that, think I'll order one and give it a try.

Hi Guys,
Just putting in my two pennyworth here !
I know that there are control problems with running universal motors with thyristor or triac speed controllers, but since these motors can run at speeds well in excess of 20 K rpm and these scotchbrite discs need upto 12 K rpm, would these types of motor solve the problem of getting the high speeds needed / wanted to drive them ?Best Regards:

These speeds don't apply to 8" disks - but to ~50mm diameter flap wheels and usually run on angle grinder style polisher.
200mm diam multifold wheels are typically 4500 rpm and 150 mm are 6000 rpm.
I could run my 8" wheel on one of my VFD powered bench grinders and would happily take it to 4500 rpm (75Hz) but all of the spindles are occupied.
