New colchester lathes
Hello,
I have always been around the 70's style square head stock triumph 2000 and mastiff 1400 lathes for 15 years. I have always like there speed selection, forward/reverse lever, and quick change gear box and so on.
I'm wondering what the new Colchester mascot/mastiff variable speed lathes are really like? I only see a start/stop button and no lever. The carriage wheel appears to be in a very different position to the old colchesters.
Does anyone know the price of these machines? I'm very aware of the price of Chinesse, TW, Indian, Italian and French machines.

I haven't used the latest 600 group machines but i believe they are made by a company called Daishin in taiwan, they had a lot of bad QC issues at first but may have now sorted that out.

I recently priced up a new Triumph 2500VS for work. For a long bed version with 1250 centres, all the extras including collet chuck and collets, 3 & 4 jaws, steadies, DRO with constant surface speed etc you won’t have much change from 50k. The master 3250VS was only around 5k cheaper from memory and is essentially a triumph bed, carriage and headstock just reduced to 13” swing, D1-4 spindle with a higher top speed. 600 group are pretty good to deal with. The bed, carriage, compound and tailstock etc all still pretty closely resemble those on the last of the triumph 2000’s.
We also have some of the earlier variable speed triumphs at work, probably from the late 80’s, early 90’s. All are still going strong everyday and running like Kathy freeman. The variable speed is an excellent feature and very useful. They are noisy machines compared to other manual lathes and the VSD definitely sounds different, although colchesters have always been noisy lathes, my Student 1800 in my shed at home screams!
If the order for the new Triumph VS goes ahead I will report back and let you know how the quality compares to the older English machines. Like most higher end Taiwanese stuff they are still pretty damn nice.

I did some research into the Dashins when pricing up options, they are very similar to the new colchesters minus a few features. They also use SKF bearings throuought, including the spindle. Colchester are still using Gamet Precision bearings like they always have.
I don’t believe either of the companies are related to Optimum, their machines are Chinese not Taiwanese and the Colchester / Dashin quality is definitely on a much higher level.

I would be seriously looking at the Chin Hung line of lathes CNC Machinery Sales makes.
Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

I was at 600 machinery today picking up a new Clausing mill and asked about the Colchester lathes (we have one we bought new 40 years ago) and I was told they are all made in Taiwan now. We will see how the Clausing goes before deciding on the next lathe that is made in Taiwan.
