Danny, you have received some good ideas and advice here, and I get what you are trying to do with having a contrasting element in your design. While brass or bronze could make a beautiful design element, the price you would have to pay unless you were fortunate to score a small piece from a scrap dealer or similar would be extortionate, and even the scrappies would likely sting you a fair bit, but if you used aluminium, it can be anodised reasonably easily in the home shop, and you could have the metal parts in almost any colour you want, albeit with the proviso that any scratches after anodising would show through as shiny aluminium. I think that it might be a safer bet than steel unless you were to zinc plate it and perhaps powder coat it as well, because rust will likely be an issue sooner or later. Good luck with your project,
    Rob.

Thanks OLCDOG! I hadn't had any luck finding a Brisbane source who had them pre-cut so far, and Capalaba is easy for me to get to.

Ropetangler - I think at this point the choice between steel and ally will come down to which I can find reasonably priced and convenient. I hadn't considered anodising, will look into it!

Found some well priced 12mm aluminium so I grabbed some 160mm squares and that will likely be what I end up using.

Now I just need to find some wood screws that won’t corrode in the Al (or figure out some other fasteners) and some sort of clear coat!

Stainless fasteners are used on aluminum. They are galvanically different but the small ratio of area of stainless to the large area of aluminium is what prevents corrosion.

Noted. Had a change of plans with this project when I found some issues with the slab and had to make it narrower!

That meant I wanted more strength out of the join than screws we’re going to provide. I’m using more traditional woodworking joinery for this one, and will try out the Al on the next project.
