why cant I cut this thread?
I have a Takisawa 1000D lathe and am attempting to cut a 16 TPI thread - I have the proper gears assembled in the gear train as shown on the info plate and the levers for threading in the appropriate position but cant seem able to cut 16 TPI
The thread chasing dial shows 24,21,20 and 18 and the appropriate alphabetical position to engage the dial - I cant understand why I cant engage anywhere as the halfnut engaging the leadscrew engages the fixed TPI leadscrew - does the fact that the chasing dial has only the numbers above mean I can only engage 24,21, 20 or 18 TPI? I am sure I haven't had this problem before so maybe I'm missing something?

What TPI is your leadscrew? a couple of photos would help a lot especially one of the screwcutting chart. With a 4 or 8 tpi leadscrew you should be able to engage at any point i believe.

I can't help you with using a thread dial, but if you have the right change wheels you can cut the thread. If all else fails use the method we use in metric country:
Engage the half nuts and don't disengage before the thread is done. Reverse the lathe to rewind the tool to its start position.

My leadscrew appears to be 4mm. pitch - tomorrow I will post photos of the screwcutting chart and all charts relevant to cutting a thread on my lathe and my interpretation of them and the settings I have used to no avail. The Takisawa lathe has a possible pitch of either 4,6 or 6 TPI (4.22 pitch)
