Default Hm-53gv Milling Machine noise diagnosis help wanted.

My milling machine started making this noise all of a sudden. The noise hasn't developed from a crash or anything happening while it was machining. It just started making the noise for no reason. Hi and low, does it in both.
The mill is not new but has very low hours on it, maybe 100. It is a Hafco Hm-53gv, I think it is the same as a Hm-50.
I'm not a machinist and have very little experience using a mill so reaching out here for some help!

That doesn't sound good at all, does the spindle get hot when you run it, is there any noticeable play in the spindle? if it's like the HM50 I've used there's an inspection cover that can be removed and the bearings can be adjusted, that's where I would start.

    Hi Guys,

That sounded very much like a bearing grabbing and spinning in the housing.

Thats as long as I'm game to run it. I'm going to do some investigating tomorrow. I'm hoping it's something simple like the speed changer not engaging properly. I switched it from hi to low several times but I'll try again in the morning. It sort of sounds like the shaft is picking up something and free spinning it, like a plate or spacer.

Do those mills have a neutral position inbetween the hi and lo?

Does it make the same noise in neutral?

    Hi Guys,

Since the noise occurs in both gears it can only be in the latter parts of the gear chain. I would suspect an intermediate shaft bearing or in the spindle bearings. Most probably the one that is most open to ingress of dirt. On my machine that would be the top intermediate gear shaft bearing.

In neutral the intermediate shaft and bearings are not driven as is the spindle.

If it is a bearing spinning in the housing, it is going to very quickly damage the housing.

I think you need to start dismantling and look for a poorly seated bearing or one that has eaten too much dirt or had bits of the cage break off. With a noise like that it's going to be something pretty obvious.
