Thread: Lever action hole punch information

Some years ago, I was offered a lever operated hole punch, stupid me declined the offer.
I think the brand of the last one I saw similar was Metal Master?
Wondering if anyone has one that would be prepared to make detailed sketches of, so I could copy to make one, as I've searched the net to no avail.
Also what size is the maximum hole diameter.

Hi Kryn,

Is this a paper hole punch, the ones for making two holes in the edge of a sheet so that it will fit in a ring binder ?

Sorry guys, I should have mentioned that it's operation is similar to the lever type hand shears, either through linkage or a gear quadrant, similar to the unit below.

Hi Kryn,

In the past I have used a fly press to punch holes in plate. The biggest was 20 X 160 in 1 mm aluminium. The only other was a lever press that I used for knocking a 7/8" hole in 2.5 mm thick UPVC. I've since given both away, along with the tooling that I made.

Thanks China, that's the type I'm looking for, now for someone to do a sketch for me of the workings.
Would like to make one as I can't justify the cost of buying one. For the asking price, it's not much more for a punch and shear machine, used one that is.

Also what would be the largest punch/capacity that would go in it, I can't quite read the sticker on the side.

I like the stand for the punch in those pictures, with the punch base set below table height so there is support for the work outboard of just the punch. I am about to re-locate my metal shears, and build a new stand for them. I'll be using this idea. Thanks for posting the pictures.

I have a cam driven punch that an employee made up years ago for pressing bearings into housings. If you think this might be useful for you I will dig it out at the weekend and take some photos. It would be the equivalent of a heavy, but relatively short travel arbor press. I would not want anything for it, but it's heavy, and it's in Sydney.

That might be easier than doing a drawing I'll have a think about it.
It doesn't have a punch and die in it and I have not got any.

Here's the cam action press I have. It's pretty rough, and has been in storage (read: dumped on the dirt under my house) for 12 years, but it still works fine. The travel is short, maybe 50mm max, and it's pretty light duty, but it did do a fine job in lieu of an arbor press for pressing 2 inch bearings into housings in a production environment. Having dug it out and looked at it now, I'm not sure that it would handle metal punching.

It's free to anyone who could use it. I have a beautiful John Heine flypress to replace it with now.

Well another project to add to the list.

Had to punch some 8x8mm square holes in some 1.2 sheet, then cut the sheet into 30x30mm squares. It would have been nice to have a hand set up seen in this thread.

Using the press is ok but cutting the little pieces of sheet up with an angle grinder then dressing it all is a pain.

This is what you really want.
Unfortunately, not mine and not for sale.
However I was able to use it at lunchtime today for a small project. 24off, 1" dia holes in 1mm aluminium sheet in about 5 minutes.

Thanks Peter, if I was doing sheet metal that would be ideal. Still you never know what we get thrown to do.
Doing an Aluminium Canopy, where I help out, the boss has never done one before, probably just as well too. It's 800 wide. 900 high and 1800 long, well one side is 900 the other end is 910 high and I'm expected to make a door to fit the space. Boss doesn't know diddly squat about working with sheet metal, and uses a texta to mark for folding and cutting, doesn't bother double checking measurements, very frustrating. He goes off at me because I mark with a scribe and square as it's taking up too much time, but I don't have to spend time making adjustments to fix/hide his stuff ups. He measures a tray for the canopy, but forgets to take off the thickness of material, then asks how can we fix it??????
