Name of degree scale on compound slide
Someone once told me there is no such thing as stupid questions, only stupid people. However nonetheless I need to ask what may be a stupid question- what is the name of the degree adjustment indicator on the compound slide? I.E the piece that tells you when are swung over to 30 degrees to cut a thread.
My lathe (AL340D) needs a new one as I wiped all the paint off the factory one when cleaning it with thinners once and I can barely read it now. It looks like a semi circle stainless piece that drops in place.

Just call it the degree scale on the cross slide. They should be able to work that out...

Digital Protractor
I use one of these to set the compound angles now.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/200mm-Di...gAAOSwa3BbXFbY
I have a square compound and so far it seems easy to set an angle and accurate enough for what I have been doing, likely more accurate than the degree scale on the cross slide.
cheers, shed

I was going to suggest 'azimuth', but 'protractor scale' will probably get you less blank looks.

I assume your lathe has an angle scale held in by bang rivets. Why not make the marks permanent with a stamped or scratched on scale.

Hi Brendan
mine fell out which is amazing as the lathe wasn't even upside down.
It is made out of aluminium and I just stuck it back in with silastic. Pity as I could have got a copy made for you.
While I have you here, I sent you a PM about the indexer.

Hi Brendan,
Just a daft thought ! You know those cheap plastic protractors that are sold for the "Back to school" events. Would one of those do what you want ?
I've seen them in the £ shops here in the UK. In fact I bet if I look, I have one somewhere.

Thanks for all the replies fellas.
I like the idea of the digital angle finder - I used to have one of them actually but it didn't last long. I will buy another.
I also like the idea of getting one made in stainless - any idea who I could approach to get that done?
I spoke to hare and Forbes re a replacement. It was a very uninspiring conversation. As such I am not going to pursue ordering one through them.

Hi Brendan,
I rekon that if you wanted to make your own (out of whatever material you like) then the easiest way is to measure the diameter of the circle quadrant on your compound, set up a piece of material in a rotary table, put a scribe in a collet in your mill, move the table until you are at the same circle diameter and then start scribing 1, 5, 10 etc degree marks. Advance the rotary table by the correct angle each time and scribe the next line.
Then it's a matter of trimming the material to fit your existing protractor scales on the compound.
This method would not take long, once set up.
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.
